Job Description :
The Assistant Professor of Research is a 12-month, non-tenured track position providing support to LGS projects and active grants including, but not limited to, surface and subsurface biostratigraphic data.
Job Responsibilities :
The successful candidate is expected to manage and build their own research programs according to the policies, mission, priorities, and strategies of LGS, LSU, and the State of Louisiana.
The candidate will build strategic partnerships with local, regional, and national partners in support of this research.
Collaborate with non-biostratigraphers at LGS, supporting a diverse array of projects. Collaborate with other departments at LSU, supporting biostratigraphy-based projects and various personnel.
Also build / continue strong collaborations with external entities. Initiate various consortia studies and projects associated with biostratigraphy.
Provide training services related to general biostratigraphy and calcareous nannofossil taxonomy. (40%)
Create inventory of biosratigraphic data existing within LGS. Actively maintain an organized catalog of housed data and samples.
Migrate information into a proper internal database. Perform biostratigraphic tasks designed to enhance geological support required for Louisiana.
Expand biostratigraphic focus to surrounding states of the U.S. Gulf Coast. Pursue relevant biostratigraphic databases & software required to deliver the highest quality work / support, and regularly investigate the use of other valuable biostratigraphy-related tools or products.
Store and manage biostratigraphic data and samples collected from wells, outcrop and core throughout Louisiana - pursue slide / sample collections from external sources (e.
g. energy industry, government, etc.). (35%)
Research and develop strong taxonomic expertise of calcareous nanofossils. Research and develop complementary expertise in, for example, stable isotope geochemistry in relation to the Gulf of Mexico and North America. (15%)
Other duties and research as assigned. (10%)
Minimum Qualifications :
Ph.D in Paleontology or related field and 10 years experience; industry experience in biostratigraphic research analysis.
Valid driver's license required.
Preferred Qualifications :
Experience in the development of biostratigraphic Biozonation scheme for the Gulf of Mexico Basin; established source-to-sink related models across the entire Gulf of Mexico (Mexico + U.
S.), from the Upper Jurassic to Recent.; organization and maintenance of large catalogs of paleontological data, creation and maintenance of a digital database.

Due to the nature of the position and / or position responsibilities this position shall be subject to pre-employment screenings (drug screen, physical, and background check) as required by LSU FASOP HR-04 and PS-67.
Physical Demands :
Physical ability and eye-hand coordination necessary to use a computer terminal, copier, telephone and other standard office equipment;
ability to sit in the same position for extended periods (5.5+ hours a day) at a time using continuous hand motions when entering data into the computer system.
May be required to occasionally lift up to 50 lbs.
