Reporting to the Vice Chancellor, Health Sciences, with dotted-line relationships to the President, UCLA Health, and the Dean, David Geffen School of Medicine, the Chief Information Officer (CIO) serves as the senior executive for UCLA Health Information Technology. The UCLA Health Sciences enterprise includes the UCLA Hospital System, the UCLA Faculty Practice Group, the David Geffen School of Medicine, and the Schools of Dentistry and Nursing. The CIO will lead a strategic, integrated, and enterprise-wide information technology function that supports the full scope of the health system's clinical, academic, and research missions. As a senior leader, the CIO will build and sustain high-performing teams, cultivate a culture of inclusion, transparency, and fairness, and demonstrate a deep commitment to mentoring and developing staff. With 10 direct reports and 922 full-time employees, the CIO oversees approximately $240M in labor and operating costs and $29M in capital expenditures.
This position provides leadership, vision, and oversight for information systems and technology, with a strong focus on service excellence, and overall responsibility for the direction, coordination, and management of all IT business and clinical functions. The CIO is also accountable for the IT Security program, ensuring that all required controls, safeguards, and processes are implemented, operationally effective, and continually optimized. The clinical informatics program, encompassing both nursing and physician informatics, also falls within the CIO's portfolio. In addition, the CIO will collaborate closely with UCLA Campus IT to support the academic mission of UCLA Health Sciences, and with UC Health and UCOP IT partners to ensure alignment and interoperability across the UC academic health system.
The ideal candidate will be a visionary leader, familiar with cutting edge technology and artificial intelligence and have progressive experience as a senior information technology leader in a large, complex academic medical center. Additional prerequisites include a track record of supporting and optimizing electronic medical records, driving innovation, improving customer satisfaction and ensuring strong fiscal performance. The individual who assumes this role must have a deep understanding of the impact of advanced information systems technology and analytics, including artificial intelligence, on patient care as well as an understanding of the impact of data sciences on the biomedical research enterprise. As the leader of a large team, evidence of a management style that inspires a culture of achieving excellence through teamwork, trust, collaboration and accountability is essential. The ability to work in a matrixed environment and engender cooperation and collaboration across departments and silos will be critical to success. A Bachelor's Degree and/or equivalent combination of education and experience is required (5+ years progressive leadership experience in information technology in a large, research-intensive, complex academic medical center or comparable environment), with a Master's degree in a field related to informatics, data science, or equivalent, or at least 10 years' progressive experience in managing and leading within higher education or academic medicine strongly preferred.

The University of California, Los Angeles is required to provide a reasonable estimate of the compensation range for this role. This range takes into account the wide range of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions including but not limited to experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. It is not typical for an individual to be offered a salary at or near the top of the range for a position. Salary offers are determined based on final candidate qualifications and experience. The full salary range for this position is $304,000 minimum to $684,200 maximum.
