Reporting to the Executive Director, Internal Communications, the Associate Director, Internal Communications holds a pivotal role as the strategic communications and media relations professional for various units, working directly with Vice Chancellors, Deans and senior management in Student Affairs; Academic Affairs; Equity, Diversity and Inclusion; Enrollment Management; Graduate Education and Postdoctoral Affairs; and The Preuss School UC San Diego. The Associate Director also collaborates with colleagues in University Communications and across campus to achieve strategic institutional and University Communications goals while championing a culture of equity, diversity and inclusion that emphasizes respect and delivering exceptional customer service to all stakeholders.
In this position, you’ll be expected to showcase excellent written and verbal communications skills and strategic thinking in developing communications plans as well as diverse content such as articles, scripts, press releases, videos, reports, speeches, talking points and more for a variety of channels including newsletters, websites, collateral and social media. You should have experience working proactively with the media and an interest in engaging with and growing your expertise in issues management and crisis communications. You’ll also be expected to help maintain editorial and brand standards, ensuring that the UC San Diego story remains consistent in the way it’s told and experienced.

QUALIFICATIONS

Bachelor's degree in a related area with 1-3 years of relevant experience, or equivalent experience / training.

Media relations experience.

Advanced knowledge and understanding of all aspects of communications, including strategic planning for various media venues, technical aspects and requirements of various venues, and most appropriate and effective applications.

Excellent written, verbal, interpersonal communications, active listening and political acumen skills. Demonstrated ability to clearly and concisely communicate ideas, thoughts, complex problems and position statements. Must possess a strong portfolio of interpersonal skills: ability to interact with tact and diplomacy with individuals from a variety of backgrounds and organizational levels, ability to constructively handle complaints, ability to be flexible, to work collaboratively and to listen well and engender trust.

Advanced skills to advise and consult management on all aspects of communications, ranging from developing effective communication strategies to appropriately responding to inquiries regarding sensitive or complex issues or information.

Proven ability to write and communicate effectively in a variety of ways (magazine articles, scripts, press releases, reports, speeches, brochures, white papers, talking points, etc.) and in ways appropriate for targeted audiences (media, support groups, legislators, etc.)
