General Information :

The Department of Psychology in the College of Health and Behavioral Studies (CHBS) at James Madison University (JMU) invites applicants for a tenure-track position at the rank of Assistant Professor and with a focus on Clinical Psychology, to begin August 2026. The new hire will join an enthusiastic pre-tenure cohort, as the department has been expanding and recently welcomed several new colleagues.

The mission of the Department of Psychology is "to educate students in, and contribute to, the science of psychology". The successful candidate will contribute to teaching Abnormal Psychology and other courses in their areas of expertise, particularly those that help meet major requirements.

Duties and Responsibilities :

Tenure-track faculty also are expected to develop an active program of scholarship that involves undergraduate students in research. Supervision of independent reading and research projects and honors thesis projects are typical components of an individual's teaching assignment. Occasional course instruction and supervision of graduate students enrolled in JMU's M.A. in Psychological Sciences Program may be possible. Additionally, the successful candidate will be expected to serve as an academic advisor to Psychology majors and to contribute to the service activities of the department, college, and university, while often taking part in professional service as well.

Psychology is among the most popular programs of study on campus, serving approximately 1200 undergraduate majors. JMU emphasizes instructional innovation in the classroom, evidence-based approaches to instructional improvement, and engaged learning experiences for undergraduates. With 29 full-time faculty members, the Department of Psychology is a strong contributor to these efforts. Qualifications :

  • Completed doctoral degree in Psychology or a closely related field by July 2026 is required.
  • Practitioner training commensurate with licensure is preferred.
  • Experience teaching Abnormal and / or Clinical Psychology is preferred.
  • Evidence of high-quality undergraduate instruction is preferred.
  • A documented history of recent peer-reviewed scholarship is preferred.
  • History of effective mentoring and research supervision for a wide variety of students is preferred.
