Job description

Program Coordinator

The New York City Department of Homeless Services (DHS) is the largest organization in the United States dedicated to preventing and addressing homelessness. In partnership with other City agencies and nonprofit organizations, DHS works to prevent homelessness before it begins, reduce street homelessness, provide temporary shelter, and connect individuals and families to stable housing all with a focus on accountability, empathy, and equity. DHS is committed to continuous improvement and employs innovative strategies to deliver high-quality services that support a swift transition from shelter to self-sufficiency. The agency manages hundreds of facilities and operates with a large team as well as a several billion-dollar budget to meet the diverse needs of New Yorkers experiencing homelessness. The Division of Shelter Operations oversees the day-to-day operations of the agency's Single Adult, Adulty Families and Families with Children shelter systems, both directly run and contracted providers. The work done in this Division centers on the re-housing of all shelter populations and the implementation of programming / shelter initiatives. This Division is responsible for making sure that services to the City's most vulnerable population are delivered 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year and throughout the five boroughs.

The Department of Homeless Services (DHS) is recruiting for two (2) Administrative Community Relations Specialist NM-I to function as Program Coordinators who will :

  • Prepare evaluation reports, policies, procedures, and workflows, by researching information and using information obtained from personal observation / review / program plans, to provide written record of the development and implementation of programs, policies and procedures.
  • Implement direct community development programs by evaluating program needs. Consult with key personnel to facilitate delivery of services.
  • Make recommendations on programs, policies and procedures by analyzing current systems / programs and objectives.
  • Research alternative methods of design, implementation of program to improve delivery of services, flow of work, and introduce best practices.
  • Analyze operations of programs, policies and procedures, by collecting information, reviewing statistics, other data, providing agency leadership with documentation for funding, and long-range planning.
  • Direct intra / inter-agency meetings, conferences related projects, and facilitate agenda to identify issues. Share information through observations, by listening to others, asking and answering questions, to resolve differences to achieve a consensus for actions to be taken.
  • Participate in unit staff meetings, by attending and facilitating the agenda to encourage relevant discussion, keeping staff informed of agency / unit goals, changes in programs, and policies and procedures.
  • Respond to requests for information or documentation from staff and other agencies. Determine material required for performing research, and consulting with supervisors who will provide required material.

Work Location : 33 Beaver Street, New York, NY 10004. Hours / Schedule : Mon-Friday 9 : 00am 5 : 00pm.

Qualifications : 1. A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college or university, accredited by regional, national, professional or specialized agencies recognized as accrediting bodies by the U. S. Secretary of Education and by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA) and four years of satisfactory, full-time community liaison, community organization or community relations experience, at least two years of which must have been in a broad administrative or policy-making capacity with responsibility for planning, organizing, coordinating, developing, evaluating and / or administering a large community service program or activity; or 2. A four-year high school diploma or its educational equivalent approved by a State's Department of Education or a recognized accrediting organization and eight years of satisfactory, full-time experience as described in "1" above, at least two years of which must have been in a broad administrative or policy-making capacity with responsibilities as described in "1" above; or 3. Education and / or experience equivalent to "1" or "2" above. Undergraduate education above the high school level may be substituted for the community liaison, community organization or community relations experience, but not for the two years of broad administrative or policy-making experience described in "1" above, at the rate of 30 semester credits from an accredited college or university (as described above) for each year of experience, up to a maximum of 4 years. Graduate education beyond the baccalaureate degree may be substituted for the community liaison, community organization or community relations experience, but not for the two years of broad administrative or policy-making experience described in "1" above, on the basis of 30 graduate credits from an accredited college or university (as described above) for each year of experience, up to a maximum of 2 years. However, all candidates must possess a four-year high school diploma or its educational equivalent approved by a State's Department of Education or a recognized accrediting organization and two years of full-time experience in a broad administrative or policy-making capacity with responsibilities as described in "1" above.
