Position description

POSITION AVAILABLE : Diagnostic Anatomic Pathologist. Asst / Assoc / Full Professor of Clinical Diagnostic Pathology in the California Animal Health & Food Safety Laboratory System (CAHFS) and Department of Pathology Microbiology & Immunology, School of Veterinary Medicine, University of California, Davis. The successful candidate will be in residence at the newly constructed CAHFS Turlock laboratory in Turlock, California. This position is on site and not currently eligible for remote work. You will be joining a local team of two avian diagnosticians and an anatomic pathologist, and will be part of a four-lab system with 19 anatomic pathologists, toxicologist, epidemiologist, bacteriologists, virologist, and an electron microscopy specialist. CAHFS-Turlock is a new 40,000 sq. ft. facility schedule to open in early 2026 with local testing capabilities such as molecular diagnostics, bacteriology including MALDI-TOF, and immunology.

QUALIFICATIONS : DVM or equivalent degree with experience in mammalian and avian diseases required. Board certification or eligibility for board certification by the American College of Veterinary Pathologists (ACVP) or European College of Veterinary Pathologists (ECVP) required. Appointment renewal to the 4th year requires ACVP or ECVP board certification. Demonstrated ability in diagnostic anatomic pathology and applied research required. Demonstrated experience in diagnostic disciplines, disease investigation and experience in diagnostic interpretation required. Advanced degree in veterinary pathology or related field preferred. Dual board certification by the American College of Poultry Veterinarians (ACPV) desired but is not a requirement. Knowledge of quality assurance, molecular diagnostics and microbiology desired. The successful candidate will have : i) excellent interpersonal and communication skills to effectively communicate with veterinarians, producers and government agencies; ii) client-focused, service-oriented approach to diagnostics; iii) demonstrated ability to work with others in a collegial team atmosphere. RESPONSIBILITIES : Diagnostic Service : The candidate will function primarily as a diagnostic pathologist in the CAHFS Bickford-Charlton laboratory located in Turlock. The majority of the caseload is anticipated to be livestock and avian species with an emphasis on disease conditions affecting cattle and commercial poultry. The laboratory also accepts equids, camelids, sheep / goats, wildlife, and zoo collection species. Interaction with veterinarians, owners and livestock producers is an integral part of this position.

Research : Creative use of diagnostic case material including publication of results in appropriate journals is essential.

Teaching : The incumbent will have daily interaction with post-DVM residents in anatomic pathology and poultry / dairy medicine and limited teaching responsibilities to veterinary and graduate students.

Service : University and public service through departmental, school and university committee work, participation in professional organizations, continuing education and other appropriate activities is required.
