Mainframe IMS Administrator

Support, optimize, and maintain enterprise-level IMS database environments for mission-critical mainframe systems.
A leading technology organization is seeking a Mainframe IMS Administrator with deep expertise in managing, tuning, and supporting IMS database systems. The ideal candidate will bring a strong foundation in database administration, system optimization, and performance tuning within complex mainframe environments.
This is a fully onsite position based in Plano, TX.
Position Overview
The Mainframe IMS Administrator will be responsible for maintaining and optimizing mainframe IMS database systems, implementing upgrades and configuration changes, and providing advanced troubleshooting and performance support. This role requires strong technical leadership, deep knowledge of IMS internals, and experience mentoring junior administrators in best practices.
Key Responsibilities
Administer and maintain IMS database systems and supporting products in mainframe environments.
Install, configure, and fine-tune IMS systems to ensure optimal performance and reliability.
Provide advanced debugging and problem analysis for database issues and incidents.
Perform complex database administration and maintenance tasks, including upgrades, patches, and migrations.
Design and execute database change requests and support application implementations.
Collaborate with infrastructure and development teams to ensure data integrity, scalability, and system stability.
Conduct performance monitoring, tuning, and capacity planning.
Mentor junior database administrators and provide technical guidance to cross-functional teams.
Adhere to established incident and change management processes and best practices.

Required Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or related field.
7+ years of experience in Mainframe IMS Administration (15–25 years preferred).
Proven expertise in IMS installation, configuration, maintenance, and performance tuning.
Strong experience in debugging, root-cause analysis, and system optimization.
Familiarity with ITIL or similar incident / change management frameworks.
Preferred Experience & Skills
Experience in large enterprise environments supporting multiple IMS databases.
Strong analytical and troubleshooting abilities with attention to detail.
Excellent communication and collaboration skills.
Ability to manage competing priorities and deliver in high-demand environments.
