Job description

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS: Include, but are not limited to, the following:

Facilities Technician I job responsibilities and assignments include:

  • May work independently, or part of a team, to complete a variety of work order assignments or supervisor-assigned tasks, maintaining accurate logs or records.

  • May work on setting up and breaking down office furniture, cubicles or modular furniture and office equipment.

  • May assist with space planning, drawings, etc. as requested.

  • Transports a variety of office or classroom furniture and electronic/office equipment such as: computers, phones, filing cabinets, wall art, copiers, printers, conference room equipment, removable fixtures, electronic and non-electronic white boards, televisions or monitors, receivers such as DVD or VCR players, computer servers, electronic display boards, film screens, audio-visual equipment, office-kitchen equipment such as refrigerators, microwaves, coffee machines, tables, chairs, shelving, etc. from one location to another using hands, hand carts, trucks, etc.

  • May order and/or pick up materials and supplies from vendors or GCU-maintained warehouse.

  • May operate or drive vehicles such as forklift, trucks, golf carts, gators, etc.

  • May assist in preparing new facilities for office moves as needed such as minor repairs, applying paint/varnish, filling cracks/holes, replacing light fixture covers, etc..

  • May operate a variety of hand or power tools such as drills, saws, hammers, screw drivers, wrenches, power paint spray, etc.

Facilities Technician II include the above work assignments plus the following:

  • May read furniture office plans, drawings, schematics to understand lay out;

  • May perform lead activities, providing direction to Facilities Technician I to ensure plans for office/facilities moves are executed appropriately and contacting the appropriate staff regarding issues.

  • Performs the necessary arithmetic/mathematical calculations for office/classroom measurements and arrangements to ensure office/classroom equipment fits as designed into space.

  • Sets up modular equipment and office cubicle panels ensuring electrical connectivity as well as all other electrical devices.

  • May meet with University departmental staff on pre-planning move requirements.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Facility Technician I and II:

  • Must have the physical strength and capability to lift, carry and move up to 50 pounds independently as well as push/pull equipment on carts, climb stairs and walk long distances across campus for extended periods.

  • Must be able read drawings, space plans or blueprints with good spatial recognition.

  • Good interpersonal skills with the ability to work cohesively with team partners.

  • Willingness to work weekends, evenings, holidays as necessary.

  • Knowledge of safety and security precautions and occupational hazards with a willingness to follow safety guidelines and/or precautions.

  • Good customer service orientation.

  • Ability to work efficiently and follow instructions or directions from others.

  • Ability to cope effectively with changing priorities and meet deadlines.

  • Reliable and dependable.

  • Must pass background checks.

Facility Technician II only:

  • Requires knowledge of basic mathematical concepts as acquired through a high school education, and the ability to perform basic mathematical calculations which may include geometry or algebra such as calculating area; calculating space configuration for multiple work stations within a work location.

Education and/or Experience:

  • High school education or equivalent.

  • Prior experience in roles which include described job responsibilities preferred.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Valid driver's license and clean driving record.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS/ENVIRONMENT: The physical demands described are representative of those typically performed during execution of the essential responsibilities and are not all inclusive. The following physical demands are estimated by the amount of time spent. Usually, the amount of time spent will be estimated on a daily basis, but depending on the position could be estimated on a weekly basis or a monthly

Constantly: 60%+ or 5-8 hrs/shift Occasionally: 10%-25% or 1-2 hrs/shift

Frequently: 25%-60% or 4-5 hrs/shift Rarely: less than 10% or less than 2 hrs/shift

Work is characterized as 50% or more ambulatory with physical exertion involving the moving of campus equipment, furniture and property of varying sizes and weights.

  • Work involves the ability to read and understand information contained in a variety of documents or displayed on a computer screen, or hand-held device display.

  • Work rarely involves the use of a computer monitor or computer keyboard to access data or to send/receive messages or prepare documents.

  • Frequently involves communicating (send and receive information) with coworkers and supervisory staff in order to receive and translate/interpret instructions and to relay information via in person, phone/2 way communications, IM or by other available and provided technology.

  • Frequently involves active listening to translate and decode information, requirements, instructions and ambiguous information.

  • Some tasks will or may require repetitive wrist movements.

  • Work frequently, and for extended periods, moving about the University’s premises, including on campus and off campus locations, to access buildings and properties via self locomotion, operation of a golf cart or other campus means.

  • Work frequently involves climbing stairs to reach upper floors, descend stairs carrying weight; may also climb using ladders, step ladders, extension ladders, lifts or aerial booms.

  • Work frequently involves the ability to visually inspect office and classroom and other spaces.

  • Works frequently involves working both indoors and outdoors during all seasons, but particularly during extreme desert heat periods.

  • Work frequently involves walking or standing on hard, soft, flat, loose ground/gravel, irregular surfaces or terrain.

  • Work frequently and repetitively involves standing, walking, bending, reaching (above and below the shoulders), holding, grasping, steering, kneeling, stooping, squatting and to maneuver in low or narrow spaces.

  • Frequently involves lifting, carrying and moving light to medium weight materials and object sizes up to 50 pounds.

  • Frequently involves the need to cope with demands and changing priorities and adjust as needed.

  • Constantly vigilant of safety precautions and prevention of injuries.

  • Constantly requires mental acuity for planning, organizing and coordinating projects; conducting mathematical calculations; multi-tasking; using judgment; formulating recommendations; problem solving; expressing ideas; composing communications.
