Director - Animal Welfare Office

Provide leadership, oversight, and management of the Office of Animal Welfare (OAW) staff and activities of the UMMC institutional animal care and use committee (IACUC) to ensure all research, testing or teaching activities using animals at UMMC is conducted ethically and in accordance with applicable federal, state, and institutional regulatory mandates.

Education & Experience : Bachelor's degree in Life Science, Public Health, Business or related field and five (5) years of regulatory compliance experience, preferably in Animal Welfare, Research Administration, working with IACUC. Certifications, Licenses or Registration Required : Certified Professional IACUC Administrator (CPIA) OR certification eligible preferred.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities : Knowledge of IACUC policies and practices. Knowledge of applicable federal and state laws related to the use of animals in research, verbal and written communication skills, interpersonal skills to interact with a wide range of constituencies. Skill in the use of personal computers and related software applications. Ability to train and supervise employees. Ability to analyze, interpret and explain law, rules and regulations.

Responsibilities :

• Directs the administrative and educational components of the IACUC.
• Establishes and implements short-and long-range goals, objectives, plans, policies and operating procedures; monitors and evaluates programmatic and operational effectiveness and makes changes as necessary.
• Develops and manages the departmental budget.
• Advises IACUC members on current policies, procedures and initiatives; ensures compliance with applicable federal, state, local and institutional laws, regulations and policies.
• Provides education, training, and guidance pertaining to the protection of animal research subjects and IACUC operations; reviews IACUC protocol submissions.
• Hires, trains, supervises, and evaluates AWO staff.
• Advises the institutional official, chair and members of the IACUC, staff of the sponsored program office on issues and federal regulations related to animal research and institutional policies.

Physical and Environmental Demands : Requires occasional exposure to unpleasant or disagreeable physical environment such as high noise level and exposure to heat and cold, occasional exposure to biohazardous conditions such as risk of radiation exposure, blood borne pathogens, fumes or airborne particles, and / or toxic or caustic chemicals which mandate attention to safety considerations, occasional working hours significantly beyond regularly scheduled hours, occasional travelling to offsite locations, occasional activities subject to significant volume changes of a seasonal / clinical nature, occasional work produced subject to precise measures of quantity and quality, frequent bending, occasional lifting and carrying up to 50 pounds, occasional climbing, occasional crouching / stooping, occasional driving, occasional kneeling, occasional pushing / pulling, constant reaching, constant sitting, frequent standing, occasional twisting, and frequent walking.
