Police Recruit
Police recruit starting salary is $60,147 until completion of training. Upon completion of field training and progression to Police Officer status, the salary increases to $62,751. New officers hired before January 1, will be eligible for a step increase at the new fiscal year. New employee hires hired after January 1, will receive their step increase the following fiscal year. Upon completion of field training and receipt of the Step 2 increase, Police Officer salary increases to $64,163. Must be a US citizen; must have a high school diploma or GED; be at least 21 years of age prior to completion of the field training program. If applicant is not a US citizen but is actively in the naturalization process, approval must be granted by the Virginia Department of Criminal Justice Services (DCJS) prior to employment. If DCJS does not grant a waiver, the applicant will be automatically disqualified from consideration and / or any offer of employment will be rescinded. Our department will work with you to submit the appropriate paperwork. Successful applicants must pass a physical agility test. Must possess or be eligible for a Virginia driver's license with no more than six demerit points in the past twelve months or a DUI conviction within the past four years; binocular vision of 20 / 25 corrected; weight in proportion to height. No conviction of felonies and / or habitual misdemeanors. No conviction of, or guilty plea or no contest plea to, any misdemeanor sex offense or any domestic assault. Must pass an extensive background investigation, which includes a polygraph, psychological, medical and drug screening. Pre-employment drug testing, FBI criminal background check and education / degree verification required. This position is considered Critical Safety Sensitive and is subject to random drug testing and alcohol testing. The use of illegal drugs, and / or the use of medical marijuana for this position is prohibited. Employees must not consume or be under the influence of alcohol while on duty, on work premises, or operating agency equipment. This position is subject to working in high security areas governed by the US Department of Justice's "Criminal Justice Information Services (CJIS) Security Policy" and therefore requires successfully passing a more stringent criminal background check.
Operate an assigned patrol vehicle. Patrol assigned areas of the county for traffic and criminal violations; respond to citizen calls, complaints, and requests for information. Conduct victim, witness, and suspect interviews. Prepare detailed reports. Make arrests; testify in court; interact with community groups and organizations. Perform other police patrol operations in the field as assigned and as needed. Perform other work as required. Shifts are permanently assigned based on department need; however, candidates applying must be able to work any shift (including overnights and weekends, if assigned).
