Job Summary

Provide and maintain a professional working atmosphere in assigned areas within the Division of Natural Sciences and Engineering. This position will have primary responsibilities within the geology classroom working with students and with geology instrumentation.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities & Knowledge Skills & Abilities

  • Job duties as assigned by the supervisor or designated staff or faculty member
  • Assist the department with student questions, explain principles, assist with labs
  • Become familiar with, and abide by, all college policies with immediate priority given to those policies that govern interactions with colleagues, staff, administrators, and departments throughout the organization
  • Maintain professional etiquette in communications with students, staff, faculty, and administrators, and maintain professional and collegial behavior
  • Provide appropriate and timely feedback for all assignments, return graded assignments in a timely fashion per department standards
  • Assist in maintaining a safe and mutually respectful instructional environment
  • Prepare and submit incident reports to Dean of Student Services for inappropriate student behavior as defined by the Code of Student Rights and Responsibilities Policy
  • Handle / respond to student concerns / complaints, and respond to student communications and inquiries promptly (generally within 1-2 days)
  • Maintain professional appearance as defined by the discipline and / or College procedure
  • Complete all required employee trainings
  • Know and enforce FERPA guidelines
  • Provide ADA accommodations as requested
  • Ability to communicate effectively with a broad range of people with a variety of abilities and backgrounds, to maintain good working relationships across the College
  • Ability to work with all groups from a variety of academic, socioeconomic, cultural, and ethnic backgrounds, and with community college students, faculty, and staff, including those with disabilities
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Professional verbal and written communication skills
  • Knowledge of general office procedures and methods including basic knowledge of Microsoft Office, and Canvas
  • Ability to set priorities, organize tasks and take initiative within established parameters
  • Ability to learn and to operate assigned equipment
  • Maintain professional and positive attitude, with the ability to grow, adapt, and take direction and work independently as necessary

Minimum qualifications

  • High School Diploma or Equivalent.
  • Experience in geology courses at Salt Lake Community College, and subject areas targeted for work, such as in geology, or specific understanding of geology instrumentation or methods.
  • Preferred Qualifications

    Advanced experience in courses or applications targeted for work, such as in the geology subject area, or specific understanding of geology methods, scientific instrumentation, or other areas of interest being pursued by the Division of Natural Sciences and Engineering
