These include transthoracic, transesophageal, and stress studies used to diagnose and assess cardiac abnormalities. General duties involve preparing equipment, prepping patients, and explaining procedures. The role includes reviewing images, reporting findings, and analyzing patient clinical history to identify the purpose of examinations. The sonographer frames the clinical question that the examination is intended to answer, expanding the examination as necessary. Essential Functions : Performs basic to advanced cardiac ultrasound procedures utilizing various equipment and techniques. Makes necessary measurements for accurate interpretation to obtain high quality results. Identifies and defines cardiac abnormalities, extending the scope of examination when necessary. Correlates invasive and noninvasive cardiac diagnostic test results with cardiac anatomy and function. May assist in procedure rooms and operating rooms, performing echocardiograph studies to aid with complex procedures. Assists in performing transesophageal studies, calculates measurements, and sterilizes probes. Prepares patients for procedures and obtains clinical histories, adapting imaging techniques as needed. Records statistics and performs daily maintenance of the Echocardiography Lab and its equipment. Acts as a resource to other staff regarding equipment, techniques, and procedures. Works closely with quality coordinators to ensure adherence to quality processes and protocols. Implements protocols as new technology evolves to ensure standards are upheld. Key Success Factors : Knowledge and ability to apply sonographic principles, instrumentation, and techniques. Understanding of cardiac anatomy and physiology. Ability to explain echocardiographic examinations and respond to questions. Familiarity with approved clinical protocols for cardiovascular ultrasound examinations. Knowledge of proper infection control and relevant laws regarding patient confidentiality. Ability to effectively communicate with healthcare providers and patients. Skilled in utilizing computers and medical equipment.
