Director Of Tax Operations

This is an on-site position and can be based from any of Asure's hub office locations including Austin, TX; Santa Ana, CA; Burlington, VT; Cherry Hill, NJ; Rochester, NY; Tampa, FL; or Cherry Hill, NJ.
How You Will Contribute
The Director of Tax Operations will lead the strategic and operational management of all payroll tax functions within our HCM / HRIS platform. This role is critical in ensuring accurate, compliant, and timely tax processing for our clients across multiple jurisdictions. You will oversee end-to-end tax operations including tax calculation, filing, payment, and reconciliation processes. As a senior leader, you will work cross-functionally with Product, Engineering, Legal, and Client Services to drive automation, improve system accuracy, ensure regulatory compliance, and deliver exceptional client experiences.
Strategic Leadership
- Develop and execute a comprehensive tax operations strategy aligned with the company's growth objectives and regulatory obligations.
- Serve as the subject matter expert on payroll tax operations, offering guidance on regulatory changes, system enhancements, and best practices.
- Partner with senior leadership to drive continuous improvements and innovation within tax processes and systems.
Tax Operations Management
Oversee daily operations related to multi-jurisdictional payroll tax calculations, filings, funding, payments, agency notices, and amendments.Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local payroll tax regulations, including income tax, unemployment insurance, and wage reporting.Manage tax calendar and reporting cycles to meet all filing deadlines accurately and efficiently.Lead the tax year-end process including W-2, 1099, and ACA reporting.Systems & Process Optimization
Collaborate with Product and Engineering teams to support tax system configuration, integration, and automation.Ensure accurate and timely implementation of legislative changes affecting payroll tax calculations and reporting.Champion the use of automation tools to improve tax operations scalability and accuracy.Team Leadership & Development
Build, lead, and mentor a high-performing tax operations team.Establish KPIs and service level expectations to drive team accountability and performance.Foster a culture of ownership, learning, and collaboration.Risk & Compliance
Implement and maintain controls to mitigate risk and ensure audit readiness.Respond to audits and tax authority inquiries in a timely and professional manner.Stay up to date on legislative and regulatory changes that impact payroll tax.Client Support & Relationship Management
Serve as an escalation point for complex client tax issues.Work with Customer Success and Implementation teams to support direct, reseller, and enterprise client onboarding and issue resolution.Provide internal and external tax operations training as needed.Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, Business, or related field.10+ years of experience in payroll tax operations, with 5+ years in a senior leadership role.Expertise in federal, state, and local payroll tax regulations.Proven experience in a high-volume, multi-jurisdictional payroll or HCM / HRIS environment.Strong leadership and team development skills.Excellent analytical, project management, and communication abilities.CPA, CPP, or similar professional certification.Experience with tax operations in a SaaS-based HCM or HRIS platform.Knowledge of systems such as ADP, Workday, UKG, Oracle HCM, or equivalent.Experience with tax automation or ERP integrations.Compensation
The base range for this role is $120,000 - $140,000, depending on level of experience. This role offers a comprehensive benefit package.
