The purpose of the position is to inspect new and existing commercial and residential construction to ensure that all trades comply with local, state and federal codes. This is accomplished by reviewing and interpreting plans, inspecting structures and projects, meeting with contractors, builders, property owners, enforcing codes and issuing permits. Other duties include responding to requests, answering inquiries, researching codes, researching and preparing budget documents; investigating incidents; completing reports; and filing and maintaining documentation.
Specific Duties and Responsibilities
- Inspects structures for compliance by reading and interpreting plans; reviewing and interpreting codes; approving or denying installation of materials or systems; developing reports and correspondence; issuing certificates of occupancy; and providing additional information to property owners and construction personnel;
- Maintains records and documents by recording progress; preparing reports; researching and preparing budget documents; and entering data;
- Reviews plans, applications, and / or other requests by answering customer inquiries and providing information; conferring with architects, engineers, builders, and property owners; explaining codes and ordinances; and scheduling inspections;
- Determines status of structures by responding to requests; examining structures for safety, allowed occupancy, condemnation, repair and / or demolition; and determining requirements for code compliance; and
- Performs other assigned duties.
Qualifications
Bachelor's Degree in Construction Management or other related field;Two (2) years of related work experience;Or equivalent training, education, and / or experience; andValid Driver's License.State of Texas Plumbing Inspector License or the ability to obtain the inspector license within 6 months from the date of hire.Supplemental Information
Knowledge of City policies and procedures;Working knowledge of the principles of structures and building materials;Working knowledge of the International Building Codes, the National Electrical Code, and / or other related regulations;Working knowledge of the defects and hazards in structural installation and equipmentKnowledge of accessibility requirements for disabled individuals;Knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite;Skill in reading and interpreting building construction plans and specifications;Skill in communicating effectively both orally and in writing;Ability to interpret and apply City codes and ordinances;Ability to obtain State of Texas Plumbing Inspector License within six (6) months from date of hire;Ability to work flexible hours, including some nights and weekends; andAbility to establish and maintain working relationships with City administration, other employees, and the general public.
