Overview

Composite Materials Staff Engineer role at GE Aerospace. This position contributes to the production of advanced jet engines, components, and integrated systems that power commercial and military aircraft. The Composite Materials Staff Engineer demonstrates accountability for functional, business, and broad company objectives. You will integrate and develop processes that meet business needs across the organization, manage complex issues within functional areas of expertise, be involved in long-term planning, and contribute to the overall business strategy.

This role is embedded in a team of Composite Material Application Engineers focused on providing experience and mentorship to operate as efficiently as possible to deliver on business needs. A staff engineer is expected to make significant contributions to the business and industry in their areas of expertise. Typical programs involve material replacement and qualification in support of discontinued composite materials; manufacturing support to achieve quality and delivery goals; root cause and corrective action assessments for processes failing to meet safety, quality, or delivery targets; and documentation of standard work to streamline team efforts.

Roles and Responsibilities

  • Identify, develop, evaluate, and introduce engineering solutions to meet near-term and long-range engineering needs
  • Provide technical consultation on product problems across the business, including supplier and field support
  • Lead and provide the key technical direction to large projects with critical business impact
  • Maintain an active role in developing and defining the state of the art in your technical specialty to anticipate, apply, adapt, or develop technologies for product introduction, quality, performance, cost improvements, and problem resolution while meeting schedules and estimated costs
  • Support other GE businesses, internal and external customers, and suppliers as required
  • Provide technical consultation to cross-functional teams to improve or resolve manufacturing, product center, supplier, or field issues
  • Effectively communicate and provide recommendations through the analysis, preparation, and presentation of technical data to internal and external GE customers
  • Use knowledge to market winning proposals in anticipation of business product needs
  • Prepare invention disclosures to protect technology and maintain competitive advantage and IP rights
  • Provide technical guidance, direction, and training to new and experienced materials engineers, specialists, technicians, and co-ops

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor of Science in Engineering, Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, or Computer Science
  • At least 5 additional years of experience in an engineering capacity
  • Desired Characteristics

  • Preference for 810 years of engineering experience
  • Expertise in composite materials applications engineering, preferably related to supporting manufacture, design, and testing of PMC components
  • Familiar with APQP practices and implementation
  • Familiar with process modeling and / or strong computational skills for capability development
  • Strong program management experience and digital management tool familiarity
  • Ability to work effectively in a team environment
  • Strong oral and written communication skills
  • Strong interpersonal and leadership skills
  • Proven ability to document, plan, market, and manage programs that advance business knowledge and capability
  • Problem analysis and resolution skills
  • Demonstrated leadership in defining the state of the art in at least one technical specialty, with ability to teach and set standard practices
