Qualifications and Requirements

The Assistant Principal shall :

  • Be a Catholic in good standing with the Catholic church; AND
  • Have a Master's degree in the field of education, preferably in educational leadership / school administration; OR
  • Within three years from the date of hire as Assistant Principal, obtain the degree in educational leadership / school administration; AND
  • Within three years from the date of hire as Assistant Principal, obtain state certification or national administrator's certificate; AND
  • Have a minimum of five-year teaching experience (Preferred not mandatory) AND
  • Maintain recency-of-credit (six college credits or its equivalent) OR ACT 48 credit hours every five years AND
  • Have a current processed Pennsylvania State Police Request for Criminal History Record Information Form (SP4-164); Pennsylvania Child Abuse History Clearance Form (CY-113);

and an FBI Fingerprint Clearance.

Professional Certification : The Assistant Principal is responsible for obtaining and keeping current all required official certifications including PA Teacher Certifications and VIRTUS.

Assistant Principal is also required to take classes toward basic, intermediate, and advanced level catechetic certification.

Professional Conduct

The Assistant Principal should uphold the Catholic, Christ-centered mission of St. Matthew School. All personnel will conduct themselves in a professional manner in both word and action.

Faculty members are expected to be Christian examples to other teachers, parents, and students and to adhere to all school and Diocesan policies.

Curriculum

All instructional activities and weekly classroom plans should be based on the Archdiocesan Curriculum Guidelines, which should be available online.

Teachers should also know and follow IHM practices and procedures.

Assistant Principal duties include :

  • Assists the principal in general administration of school and serves as principal when the principal is absent
  • Assists in the registration process in a public relations capacity (telephone queries, tours and information, organizes testing of new students, waiting list information and parent conferencing as to placement, evaluation or probation)
  • Assists in the planning of staff development in-service program
  • Participates in long range planning of the school
  • Engages in the evaluation and implementation of curriculum as assigned
  • Assists in maintaining discipline throughout the school and deal with special cases as necessary
  • Collaborates with the counselor / Learning Support teacher with special student cases
  • Supervises student activities as directed by the principal
  • Participates in the accreditation process of the school
  • Advises in the grade placement and the grouping of students
  • Assists principal in the evaluation of instruction
  • Attends designated meetings in addition to or as the representative of the principal
  • Revises handbook and yearly calendar with the principal
  • Mentors new teachers as requested by the principal
  • Coordinates policies and information with the junior high teachers and conduct a junior high staff meeting every two weeks
  • Performs any other duties designated by the principal
  • Participates in special activities, organizations, and events such as Catholic Schools Week, Christmas Program, Staff Development
  • Serves on diocesan committees and participates in diocesan projects
  • Supervises students outside of classrooms as assigned or needed

Required Meeting Attendance : Teachers are required to attend meetings :

  • Faculty meetings
  • Grade level and Grade cluster meetings
  • Welcome Back to School Parent Meeting
  • Home and School General Meetings
  • Parent / Teacher Conferences held annually
  • Other pertinent meetings determined by the principal

Communications : The Assistant Principal should encourage open dialogue with parents and teachers and seek their full participation and cooperation regarding the academic and personal development of students.

Special communication efforts should be made when students are failing scholastically or engaging in disruptive behavior.

The Assistant Principal is required to maintain strict confidentiality in all personal matters concerning students and all personnel matters concerning faculty and staff.

The Assistant Principal should keep a log of communications with parents (email, phone, conference) to have a personal record.
