Job description

Duke University :

Duke University was created in 1924 through an indenture of trust by James Buchanan Duke. Today, Duke is regarded as one of America's leading research universities. Located in Durham, North Carolina, Duke is positioned in the heart of the Research Triangle, which is ranked annually as one of the best places in the country to work and live. Duke has more than 15,000 students who study and conduct research in its 10 undergraduate, graduate and professional schools. With about 40,000 employees, Duke is the third largest private employer in North Carolina, and it now has international programs in more than 150 countries.

Be You.

At Duke, we celebrate individuality and the unique perspectives that each member of our community brings. As the Financial Management Analyst I in the Department of Computer Science, you'll be a vital part of a collaborative, interdisciplinary team that supports faculty, students, and staff across a dynamic academic environment. Your work will help ensure financial transparency, operational excellence, and inclusive support for a department that thrives on innovation and diversity.

Be Bold.

Step into a role where your analytical skills and financial expertise will directly impact the success of Duke's Computer Science programs. You'll manage a diverse portfolio of departmental funds - from endowments and gifts to faculty start-up and discretionary accounts - and partner with stakeholders across campus to streamline financial operations and support strategic planning.

What You'll Do :

  • Oversee a large portfolio of unrestricted gifts and non-reporting WBSEs, ensuring timely fund transfers, accurate deposits, and donor coordination.
  • Provide monthly financial reporting, forecasting, and transaction approvals across Buy@Duke, AP, and TRaC systems.
  • Monitor and manage faculty cost centers including start-up, research, and discretionary accounts, ensuring compliance and accuracy.
  • Collaborate with CGMT and departmental liaisons to plan and manage faculty summer salary, RBOs, and related activities.
  • Partner with graduate and undergraduate program leads to coordinate annual budgets, maintain financial trackers, and project multi-year funding needs.
  • Reconcile and analyze departmental accounts, providing financial assessments and risk identification to the Senior Business Manager.
  • Serve as the departmental lead for corporate card management, including training, reconciliation, and compliance documentation.
  • Manage accounts receivable activities such as royalties, event registrations, and internal transfers.
  • Act as an authorized approver for financial transactions and submissions to University Cashiers and Gift Records.
  • Support pre-award activities by reviewing budgets, approving proposal deadlines, and ensuring sponsor compliance.
  • Assist new faculty with grant setup and initial financial planning.
  • Develop and maintain departmental financial trackers for IOUs, MOUs, and other commitments.
  • Provide reconciliation and oversight for service centers, including billing, fee structuring, and major purchases.
  • Collaborate on workflow documentation, process mapping, and data quality assurance across departmental systems.
  • Liaise with the Chair, Business Manager, and Senior Program Coordinator on special projects and operational initiatives.

Minimum Qualifications :

  • Education : Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Economics, or a related business field.
  • Experience : Entry-level candidates with a relevant degree are welcome. Preferred candidates will have at least three years of experience in financial management, cost accounting, or a related field - or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Preferred Skills :

  • Strong analytical and financial reporting skills.
  • Advanced computer proficiency, including experience with MS Excel, SAP, and Duke financial systems.
  • Ability to interpret and apply complex financial and HR policies.
  • Excellent organizational, written, and verbal communication skills.
  • Proven ability to work independently, exercise sound judgment, and solve problems flexibly.
  • Experience supervising or coordinating HR / payroll activities within a financial management context.
  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate effectively with faculty, students, and staff.
  • Prior experience in academia or supporting research and academic programs.
  • Genuine interest in supporting the academic and research mission of the university.
  • Anticipated Pay Range :

Duke University provides an annual base salary range for this position as USD $59,829.00 to USD $86,700.00. Duke University considers factors such as (but not limited to) the scope and responsibilities of the position; the candidate's work experience, education / training, and key skills; internal peer equity; as well as market and organizational considerations when extending an offer.

Your total compensation goes beyond the dollars on your paycheck.
