Overview

Work Location : Central Library, 1301 Barcarrota Boulevard, Bradenton, Florida 34205

Work Hours : Varies

Expected Starting Hourly Range : $25.56 - $31.95

This classification performs a variety of technical / professional / supervisory duties in the Manatee County Public Library System. Supervision is exercised over library staff. Work involves working both with the public and behind the scenes, handling branch and / or section responsibilities. Work is performed under the general supervision of a Librarian III or higher level of management.

Working Conditions

Indoor / Office situation; high noise environment while performing certain responsibilities. Lifting equipment up to 25 lbs. alone; up to 50 lbs. with assistance. May require working at a computer for extended periods of time.

Area of Assignment : Information Services Assistant Supervisor

  • This position supports the Information Services section at Central Library, acting as assistant supervisor of Information Services, and will be called upon to supervise staff members and library volunteers as needed.
  • Maintains awareness of library service trends and information sources, with emphasis on reference, business, workforce development and historical preservation.
  • Must possess the ability to work with clientele of various socioeconomic backgrounds.
  • Provides reference, technology and database support to the public and to county staff.
  • Assists in facilities management (maintenance, technology and security concerns); staff scheduling; public and staff programming in reference, business, workforce development and historical preservation; outreach; displays; and emergency operations duties as assigned.
  • Acts as site coordinator for the virtual reference service Ask a Librarian.
  • Collaborates with library and county administration, and partners with community members and organizations.
  • Serves on county and library committees as directed.
  • Supervises the operation of a section within a branch and / or performs as the assistant supervisor of a branch or section within the Central Library and may act as direct supervisor of Library staff.
  • Provides reference and readers advisory services to the general public.
  • Performs technical cataloging and / or circulation tasks.
  • Compiles bibliographies, bookmarks, reading lists, etc., as necessary.
  • Plans, coordinates, and presents adult and juvenile programming, both inside the library and in community facilities, as requested.
  • Acts as library liaison to community groups. Develops community contacts.
  • Supervises / coordinates the work of clerical support and professional staff.
  • Maintains currency in professional library issues, developments, materials, and equipment.
  • Coordinates activities of section in collection management routines.
  • Trains / instructs patrons in print and non-print library resources.
  • Interprets and enforces relevant Library / County policies and procedures to the public.
  • Prepares monthly, annual and special reports / statistics.
  • May schedule, train and / or supervise volunteers, public service workers, and AARP workers.
  • Participates in the selection of staff. Trains, supervises, evaluates and schedules staff within area of responsibility.
  • Prepares publicity for assigned area.
  • Participates as part of library system management team and attends meetings as required.
  • Recommends policy changes to immediate supervisor / administration.
  • Performs other related work (including weather or other extreme emergency duties) as required.
  • Education and Experience

  • Master's degree in library science from a university or college accredited by the American Library Association. Verifiable experience in customer service, people management, facilities management, technology use, and training may be considered in lieu of education, depending on the area of assignment.
  • Minimum of one (1) year of supervisory experience, or one (1) year demonstrated experience overseeing projects or departmental functions, including task delegation and accountability.
  • Valid driver license required, with valid Florida driver license required within 30 days of hire.
  • Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Knowledge of modern principles and practices of library science and of library materials, library organization, procedures, policies, aims and services.
  • Knowledge of and experience with automated systems regarding library functions.
  • Knowledge of basic supervisory principles and practices.
  • Ability to perform library technical tasks and carry out assignments independently.
  • Ability to establish and maintain good relationships with public and staff.
  • Ability to use computer applications.
  • Ability to enforce Library and County conduct policy.
  • Ability to communicate clearly, orally and in writing.
  • Ability to work rotating schedules, including days, nights and weekends.
