Facilities Maintenance Specialist
Job Summary
The Facilities Maintenance Specialist position performs basic to intermediate building maintenance duties and repairs at City Hall and other City facilities and park structures.
Typical duties include carpentry, basic plumbing, lamp replacement, wall repair and painting. This position performs routine inspections of plumbing, HVAC, and life safety equipment, and provides support for special functions at City Hall including but not limited to : set up of furnishings for special functions and meetings, set up of art displays, pictures and signage.
This is a full-time, regular, non-exempt union position. This position is covered under the provisions of an agreement between the City and the AFSCME union.
The schedule for this position is M-F, 8am to 5pm.
Job Details
Essential Functions :
- Basic to intermediate repair work on building fixtures, walls, doors, door locks, hardware and furniture
- Repair, patching and painting walls, repair or replacement of door locks and basic plumbing work with restroom fixtures.
- Set up and take down of fixtures and furniture for special meetings and events.
- Operate various power and hand tools such as saws, sanders, drills, air compressors, painting equipment and sewer augers.
- Identify and perform preventive and repair maintenance needs, maintain records and maintenance logs.
- Use a computer and the City computerized maintenance management systems (CMMS) Work order system and other communication media to receive and report on requests for facilities maintenance.
- Assist other Facilities maintenance staff in other building maintenance duties as needed.
- Safely operate City vehicles as needed.
- Participate in safety meetings, training requirements as needed and comply with City safety requirements.
- Perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned.
Qualifications
Experience and Education
- Three (3) years of building maintenance experience
- Equivalent to a HS Diploma / GED
- Equivalent combinations of education and experience may be considered.
Computer Skills
- Basic skills in Microsoft Word, Outlook, and Internet Explorer
- Basic skills using a database system or Excel
Required Licenses and / or Certifications
Possession of an appropriate, valid driver’s license
Ability of obtain :
- CPR / First Aid AED card within three (3) months of hire
- Confined Space certification within six (6) months of hire.
- Forklift certification within six (6) months of hire
- Defensive Driving certification within six (6) months of hire
- CJIS certificate within three (3) months of hire
- Scissor and / or articulating lift certification within one (1) year of hire
Knowledge
- Basic theory of electricity
- Basic theory and practice of plumbing, carpentry and sheetrock repair
- Basic theory of heating, ventilation and air conditioning systems
- Safe work practices
- Pertinent federal, state, and local laws that pertain to :
- Modern office procedures, methods, and computer equipment
- Use of personal computers and basic software
Abilities
- Use of power tools and equipment
- Drive a City vehicle in a safe manner
- Lift 50 pounds above the waist, stand for extended periods of time and carry heavy objects
- Operate a personal computer and appropriate software
- Work in a manner consistent with the City of Vancouver’s Operating Principles
- Work and act as a team player in all interactions with other City employees
