Job description

Overview

The Fleet Engineer supports the Assistant Port Engineer in the maintenance, repair, and regulatory compliance of all American Cruise Lines' certificated vessels and launches. The Fleet Engineer provides immediate response for critical repairs to the portion of the ACL fleet assigned, to ensure the vessels remain safe and on schedule. The Fleet Engineer must be familiar with all vessel machinery, equipment and systems. This position reports directly to the regional Assistant Port Engineer.

Responsibilities

  • Take supervision and direction from the Assistant Port Engineer and Port Engineer.
  • Provide support and coverage to Assistant Port Engineers.
  • Identify and troubleshoot technical vessel problems and provide fast solutions to minimize downtime.
  • Expedite vendors for critical repairs.
  • Coordinate and communicate with Marine Operations for critical repairs and determine a timeline for resolution.
  • Manage warranties and coordinate extended warranties for technical equipment.
  • Ensure competitive bidding and negotiate costs on purchases.
  • Manage expenses and assist with the annual winter maintenance budget.
  • Maintain responsibility for record keeping, including machinery history, parts inventory and reporting data to the Assistant Port Engineer.
  • Coordinate large scale projects such as ship refits and dry dockings.
  • Visit each ship at least three times a month, including a full ship condition inspection.
  • Provide technical information and guidance to shipboard Engineers and crew directly, as directed by the Assistant Port Engineers.
  • Interface with Marine Operations and Hotel Operations.
  • Ensure vessel compliance with all USCG, USPH, FDA, EPA, and other federal regulations.
  • Perform other duties as directed.

  • Ability to diagnose machinery malfunctions and recommend corrective action.
  • Ability to read and understand blueprints and machinery systems' technical manuals.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel and HelmConnect; ability to use repair manuals.
  • Mechanically inclined; proficient with hand and power tools.
  • Knowledgeable of diesel and gas engines.
  • Ability to learn and take direction from the port engineer.
  • Licenses and Registrations

  • Valid driver's license.
  • Possess a valid TWIC (Transportation Worker Identification Card).
  • Required Education and Experience

  • Must be at least 18 years old.
  • High school diploma or equivalent or equivalent related experience.
  • Typical Work Environments

  • This position includes a high level of travel to Fleet concentration areas.
  • Frequent underway time for short durations performing, testing, inspections, ship checks, and other events as needed. Travel up to 80% of the time.
  • Vendor maintenance shops, paint shop, various buildings and storage areas.
  • Vessel engine room, bow thruster space and various void spaces throughout vessel.
  • Additional Requirements

  • Subject to a background investigation.
  • Subject to a pre-employment physical.
  • Ability to frequently traverse stairs, fixed ladders and ladder-wells while walking ships on a daily basis.
  • Ability to spend several consecutive days at sea while underway as needed.
  • Capable of sitting for long periods, standing, walking, crouching and kneeling.
  • Reaching, handling, using equipment, keyboards and mobile devices.
  • Must be located on the East Coast.
  • Lifting boxes (files and supplies) up to 20 lb.
