Position Summary
The Bridge Maintenance Technician performs maintenance on bridges and sign structures to ensure safe travel. Responsibilities include inspections, repairs, sealing, cleaning, patching, graffiti removal, and tightening hardware. The role involves working at heights with strict safety measures, setting up traffic control, operating tools and light equipment, and documenting work completed. DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES :
- Perform bridge and sign structure maintenance, including concrete patching, crack / joint sealing, spall repairs, epoxy injections (as trained), bearing cleaning and lubrication, anchor / bolt tightening, and protective coatings.
- Work at heights using bucket trucks, lifts, scaffolding, and approved access methods; always use fall protection and rescue equipment near edges, over water, and in confined or elevated spaces.
- Inspect and clean bridge drainage systems, scuppers, and downspouts; clear debris to maintain proper flow and prevent deck and substructure deterioration.
- Support structural and appurtenance repairs on sidewalks, approaches, parapets, guardrail / bridge rail, attenuators, cabinets, and sign structures; verify alignment and hardware torque after repairs.
- Perform general roadway maintenance near structures, including pothole patching, minor asphalt and concrete repairs, fence and sign repair / replacement, and litter and debris removal.
- Conduct vegetation management around bridge ends, abutments, and sign foundations, including mowing, trimming, brush cutting, and supervised herbicide application to maintain sightlines and access.
- Clean and grade ditches and drainage features near bridges and approaches; maintain shoulders and slopes, and implement basic erosion control as directed.
- Set up and maintain Maintenance of Traffic (MOT) and temporary traffic control per MUTCD and state standards; perform flagging and protect work zones on bridges and narrow shoulders.
- Operate hand and power tools and light equipment, including commercial mowers, tractors, skid steers, mini‑excavators, chain saws, pole saws, blowers, compactors, and forklifts, within training and authorization limits.
- Make minor low-voltage lighting and electrical repairs to bridge and sign lighting as directed; escalate larger electrical issues to qualified personnel.
- Perform pre-trip and post-trip inspections; drive company trucks and tow trailers or arrow boards; ensure proper load securement and DOT compliance.
- Complete preventive maintenance on tools, vehicles, and equipment; keep service records current and report defects promptly.
- Document work orders, inspections, materials, equipment hours, and before / after photos using paper forms and mobile devices accurately and on time.
- Provide after-hours emergency response during on-call rotations, including incident response, debris removal, and urgent structural or drainage issues.
- Load and unload tools, materials, and equipment safely; maintain clean, organized vehicles, yards, and work sites; follow all safety and environmental procedures.
- Perform other duties as assigned to support project schedules, inspections, and emergency operations.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES :
Knowledge
Highway and bridge maintenance basics, including concrete patching, crack and joint sealing, hardware torque checks, and protective coatings.Work zone safety and MUTCD fundamentals, PPE requirements, and hazard recognition near live traffic and at heights.Standard methods, materials, tools, and light equipment used in roadway and bridge work, including drainage and vegetation control around structures.Basic understanding of drainage systems on bridges and approaches, including scuppers and downspouts.Company SOPs, DOT expectations, and environmental guidelines for material handling, disposal, and work near or over water.Skills
Operate standard tools and equipment safely, such as drills, impact wrenches, grinders, saws, compactors, skid steers, mini-excavators, forklifts, and aerial lifts.Set up and maintain temporary traffic control and perform flagging per direction and standards.Perform routine inspections and preventive maintenance on vehicles, tools, and equipment, complete pre-trip and post-trip inspections.Read simple plans and field sketches; follow written and verbal instructions; complete work orders and checklists on paper or mobile devices.Communicate clearly with supervisors, crew members, inspectors, and the public. Drive company vehicles, tow small trailers, and secure loads correctly.Abilities
Work safely at heights and, when needed, near or over water, while using fall protection and maintaining situational awareness.Lift up to 50 lbs., regularly carry up to 25 lbs., and perform frequent bending, kneeling, climbing, and walking on uneven terrain and slopes.Work outdoors in heat, humidity, rain, wind, cold, and low-light conditions, including nights, weekends, overtime, and emergency call-backs.Prioritize safety, recognize hazards, stop work when necessary, and follow all SOPs and traffic control requirements.Travel within the assigned district and adapt to changing schedules and emergency operations.EDUCATION AND WORK EXPERIENCE :
Required Qualifications
Must be at least 23 years old (per company insurance requirements).Must possess an active and valid Florida driver’s license with no restrictions and be able to pass a Motor Vehicle Record (MVR) check and maintain insurability under company policy.Basic math, reading, and recordkeeping skills to complete work orders and material logs accurately.Ability to obtain Maintenance of Traffic (MOT) or Flagger certification within company timelinesWilling and able to travel within the assigned district and report to different work sites; living within a reasonable response time to the yard is preferred.Compliance with the company's Drug and Alcohol Policy; able to pass pre-employment and random testing. A background check and job-related physical may be required.Previous experience in road maintenance, landscaping, construction, or a related field is a plus.Preferred Qualifications
