Job Description

The Division of Pulmonary, Critical Care and Sleep Medicine at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai is seeking a Bioinformatician I . The division conducts multidisciplinary clinical and translational research with state-of-the art equipment and cutting-edge technology for diseases and disorders across the lifespan.

A fully-funded Bioinformatician position is available with Dr. Alison Lee at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai in NYC. Funding is guaranteed for 2 years with potential for further support. Dr. Lee's research leverages an NIH-funded ongoing pregnancy cohort study in Kintampo, Ghana (The Ghana Randomized Air Pollution and Health Study, GRAPHS) investigating the impact of perinatal exposures (both chemical and non-chemical) on maternal-child health broadly and the programming of chronic disease risk. Dr. Lee's community-engaged and solutions-oriented research focuses on understanding how exposure to air pollution, humid-heat, and precipitation / drought over pregnancy and early childhood program future health. Research studies consider a range of outcomes including growth, lung health and cardiovascular health in both mothers and children. Mechanisms examined include a specific focus on epigenetic mechanisms including DNA methylation, non-coding microRNAs and long noncoding RNAs, and extracellular vesicle communications. Metabolomics and microbiome are also of interest. The successful bioinformatician will lead epidemiology and computational investigations of how these high-resolution exposures, and molecular mechanisms, are associated with human health.

Qualifications

B.S. in Biological Sciences, Bioinformatics, Computer Sciences, Statistics or related discipline; M.S. preferred

3 years experience required

Working experience with genetics or statistics analysis software and online resources. Experience in programming environments such as Matlab, R statistical package, BioConductor, Perl or C++.

Responsibilities

Writes custom scripts for analysis of exposure-response analysis, including with hypothesized mechanistic mediators.

Designs and implements bioinformatics tools and processes in order to analyze large scale datasets.

Identifies and resolves technical issues and proposes upgrades to current software.

Develop projects and work independently on a variety of bioinformatics analysis projects.

Manages databases, conducts statistical analyses, and participates in the preparation of manuscripts and presentations.

May collaborate with wet-bench biologists and work independently to analyze data derived from several types of projects.

May give presentations both inside and outside of the institution.

Excellent written and oral communication skills and a willingness to work as part of a collaborative team are required. Candidates will be responsible for moving forward several projects and maintaining active collaborations with outside investigators.

Team : The Bioinformatician will work closely with Dr. Lee and will be part of an interdisciplinary team of environmental epidemiologists and computational biologists dedicated to environmental health investigations.

Relevant previous work and interest in environmental health, particularly working with high dimensional raster data or personal exposure monitoring data. Strong quantitative skills, practical experience working with complex epidemiology data, familiarity with the Python and R statistical software packages and excellent oral communication and scientific writing are also necessary.

Compensation Statement

Mount Sinai Health System (MSHS) provides a salary range to comply with the New York City Law on Salary Transparency in Job Advertisements. The salary range for the role is $65000.17 - $87610 Annually. Actual salaries depend on a variety of factors, including experience, education, and hospital need. The salary range or contractual rate listed does not include bonuses / incentive, differential pay or other forms of compensation or benefits.
