Urban Designer Level I
We seek a talented Urban Designer with 1-2 years of relevant experience to work in our San Francisco office . The position requires a strong interest and ability in collaborating with interdisciplinary teams on research, analysis, writing, community engagement, concept diagrams, and 2D / 3D representation for urban design and planning projects.
Projects will be diverse, including district and neighborhood plans, station area plans, corridor plans, development and design standards, and regional policy and funding research around climate resiliency, housing, and equity.
This position presents the opportunity for the candidate’s professional growth and ability to provide leadership within an established practice.
Responsibilities include :
Developing planning / urban design concepts at the scale of neighborhoods, blocks, buildings, streets, and open space under direction and guidance from senior team members
Preparation of urban design plans and diagrams at the scale of blocks, specific sites, streets, and buildings
Preparation of 3-D digital massing models, photo-simulations, and other graphics
Researching, mapping and geospatial analysis
Preparing for and participating in public, client, and other project meetings
Writing reports
Layout of documents
Working both collectively with team members and independently
Full time engagement in accordance with WRT policies, including currently working in-office minimum 3 days / week
Required skills and training :
A bachelor’s degree in architecture is required
A graduate degree in planning or urban design is required
1 to 2 years of experience in urban design, some architecture experience desirable
Knowledge of urban planning theories and best practices
Ability to understand and synthesize relevant information and prepare written summary reports
Proficiency in conducting complex GIS analysis and mapping, and knowledge of using proprietary and open source data
Proficiency in preparing urban design graphics, data visualization, and plan document layout using Adobe Creative Suite (Illustrator, InDesign, Photoshop) and MS Suite.
Proficiency in 3D visualization using SketchUp and Rhino.
Working knowledge of AutoCAD.
Working knowledge of building a basic project website and online surveys, using WordPress, Square Space, Google sites or similar platforms
Working knowledge of using social media platforms for community engagement purposes.
The ability to communicate clearly and concisely verbally and in writing and demonstrate a competency in presenting ideas and concepts
Strong organizational skills and ability to work on multiple projects and tasks simultaneously.
Ability and desire to grow into a team-lead role.
Some exposure to public and private sector planning and urban design
Software Knowledge : AutoCAD, Rhino 3D, Sketch Up, Adobe Creative Suite (including but not limited to Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign), ArcGIS and MS Office required.
Revit and Lumion a plus
Experience in advanced graphic communication techniques such as 3D modeling, rendering, GIS mapping, urban design diagrams, photo montage, and hand sketching are required
The ability to complete tasks with accuracy and with strong attention to detail
Knowledge and understanding of building components and typologies and their relationship to public space and urban infrastructure
Compensation & Benefits Include* :
- The expected pay range for this position is $70K - $76K annually, dependent upon education, skills, experience, skillset
