Job description

Archaea Energy, a bp company, is a leader in landfill gas to energy and the largest renewable natural gas (RNG) producer in the US. We specialize in the development, construction and operation of RNG, landfill-gas-to-electric and dairy digester facilities. The team operates around 50 sites in 32 states with a robust development pipeline.

About The Role

At our Northwest Tennessee Renewable Natural Gas Plant in Union City, TN, we convert landfill gas into pipeline quality natural gas (High Btu or Renewable Natural Gas). The RNG Operator will operate the landfill gas processing facility, removing non-methane components (CO2, water, sulfur and volatile and non-volatile organic compounds) to attain pipeline quality.

The RNG Operator will operate and maintain a Landfill gas to High BTU processing facility, including gas processing systems, gas compressors, CO2 removal, thermal oxidizers, and H2S removal. They perform intermediate to advanced instrument and control repair, maintenance, calibration and problem-solving.

This site's weekly schedule consists of four 10-hour days with shifts Mon.–Thu. or Tue.–Fri 6am–4pm or 8am–6pm. On-call duty is required on a rotating basis. Schedule is subject to change per business needs.

Key Accountabilities

  • Own the safe operation of the plant during assigned shift, maintaining compliance with SOPs and safety / environmental standards.
  • Inspect plant equipment, record data (fluid levels, temperatures, pressures), compare to trends, and make corrections as needed.
  • Review daily operating reports to ensure operating characteristics are within specification.
  • Perform preventive maintenance and repairs on plant instrumentation and equipment.
  • Detect and correct faulty mechanical and electrical components.
  • Operate sophisticated instrumentation and process control systems.
  • Test electrical systems and circuits using tools (ohmmeters, voltmeters).
  • Work on electrical wiring up to 480 volts; install, remove and modify equipment.
  • Advise Lead Operation Technician and Regional Manager of shutdowns or major changes in power output.
  • Maintain plant equipment and structures per manufacturer and Archaea Energy guidelines.
  • Maintain a clean workspace and daily operation logs per prescribed standards.
  • Assist in planning maintenance and outage activities; assist in defining, ordering and procuring parts.
  • Respond to callouts and work overtime as needed.
  • Perform analytical tests (e.g., pH, conductivity, methane, H2S, moisture).
  • Support hazardous waste handling and management per training, including labeling, container movement, paperwork, and shipping manifests.
  • Travel 25–50% per month (first 12 months at a new plant travel may be 50%; travel reduces to 25% in year 2 and beyond).

Essential Education

  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • Essential Experience

  • Intermediate electrical, chemical and mechanical experience.
  • Previous landfill gas operation experience is a plus (1–3 years in landfill gas processing, chemical plant operations, industrial gas operations, or power plant operations or equivalent).
  • Understanding of process control systems as applied to landfill gas collection and processing.
  • Technical / problem-solving skills with ability to read technical manuals and schematics.
  • Understanding sensors and transducer systems; calibrate and troubleshoot pressure, level, flow and temperature sensors; understand plant process and control system effects.
  • Knowledge of basic math, gas chemistry, piping and instrumentation drawings.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision and follow procedures.
  • Ability to recognize colors and indicators on PLCs; read and interpret safety rules and operation manuals.
  • Ability to write routine reports and communicate effectively.
  • Proficient computer skills (MS Word, Excel, email) and ability to monitor and adjust equipment within operating parameters; perform fault finding and required maintenance.
  • Hands-on mechanical and process equipment experience.
  • Valid driver's license and ability to pass hearing and DOT drug test.

    Compensation & Benefits

    Base pay : $31.00–$32.00 per hour. The posted pay range is a genuinely expected range at the time of posting. Benefits include paid vacation (hours vary by experience), 9 paid holidays and 2 personal holidays. Details available in benefits information.
