The NCI-designated Chao Family Comprehensive Cancer Center (CFCCC) is a campus-wide multidisciplinary matrix organization whose goal is to promote and enhance cancer-relevant research and patient care at UC Irvine. The CFCCC provides research resources to its hundreds of members engaged in research and offers multidisciplinary cancer care to its patients.

The Stern Center for Cancer Clinical Trials and Research (Stern Center) is the centralized office for cancer clinical research operations at UCI and is the best-practice leader in clinical research operations at UC Irvine. There are five distinct and collaborative units : Quality Assurance, Protocol Review and Monitoring, Regulatory Affairs, Clinical Trials, and Clinical Research Business Operations. These units provide administrative expertise, comprehensive regulatory management, clinical research coordination, data management, quality control, and business operations support to all CFCCC members.

Your Role on the Team

The Clinical Research Business Manager (CRBM) reports to the Assistant Director, Clinical Research Business Operations (AD CRBO) and is directly responsible for managing the overall pre-award activation portfolio. The CRBM is also responsible for fiscal management of all clinical research contracts and grants from various sponsors and fund sources (e.g., industry contracts, federal grants, state and federal, philanthropic, and institutional funds) in support of the Cancer Center's investigator initiated (IITs) trial portfolio.

The principal role of the CRBM is to manage the expeditious and timely activation of new research trials based on key performance indicators, negotiate budgets and contracts, and ensure post award finances of the IIT portfolio is up to date and current, ensuring receipt of all funds owed to the CFCCC. In addition, the CRBM develops, implements, and maintains policies and standard operating procedures for the activation workflow for clinical research and investigator-initiated post award management with a focus on efficiency, innovation and quality in collaboration with the AD CRBO. The CRBM ensures that goals for activation timelines are met.

The Clinical Research Business Manager receives assignments in the form of objectives and determines how to use resources to meet schedules and goals. The CRBM manages the activities of the pre-award team. Provides guidance to subordinates to achieve goals in accordance with established policies. Work is reviewed and measured based on meeting objectives and schedules. Follows processes and operational policies in selecting methods and techniques for obtaining solutions.

Receives assignments in the form of objectives with goals and the process by which to meet those goals. Responsible for supervising the day-to-day unit activities. Normally directs a section or group of budget / financial / resources analysts. Oversees and participates in the most complex projects and deals directly with major department managers. Provides direction according to established policies and management guidance.

What It Takes to be Successful

Required :

• Extensive knowledge of finance policies, practices and systems, budgeting and reporting techniques, accounting and bookkeeping.
• Solid understanding of financial and resource planning concepts as well as how to control organizational budgeting.
• Ability to prepare and present materials to internal and external constituents.
• Extensive knowledge of human resource policies, practices, and planning.
• Demonstrated ability to effectively communicate both verbally and in writing.
• Advanced skills in the use of spreadsheet and database software.
• Demonstrated interpersonal skills and ability to work effectively across the organization at all levels.
• Proven ability to deal with changing priorities and direct the work of others accordingly. Ability to multi-task.
• Demonstrated ability to screen applications, interview candidates, and either make selection decisions or recommend individuals for hire.
• Thorough knowledge and understanding of internal control practices and their impact on protecting University resources.
• Client services oriented; has good listening, communication, critical thinking, and analytical skills.
• Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training
• 5-7 years experience with BA / BS or equivalent years of relevant experience in an academic and / or research environment
