Science Laboratory Manager (Chemistry)

Tidewater Community College has served South Hampton Roads both students and employers for 50 years. This position is responsible for providing a safe laboratory environment and quality teaching and learning environment for students, faculty and staff through efficient maintenance, oversight and leadership of the science laboratories. This includes laboratory design and setup, procurement and management of materials and equipment, supervision of part-time workers, budget management, and ensuring the safe practices of laboratory procedures.

Minimum Qualifications :

• Knowledge of chemistry.
• Knowledge of materials and equipment used in chemistry laboratories.
• Knowledge of methods of laboratory management.
• Knowledge of preparation of chemical solutions.
• Knowledge of Safety Data Sheets (SDS).
• Knowledge of proper chemical waste collection, storage, and disposal procedures.
• Ability to plan, lead, manage, and evaluate work staff
• Skilled in chemistry lab preparation and / or teaching.
• Skills in integrated office software.
• Ability to organize and maintain inventory of multiple laboratories.
• Ability to supervise and train personnel in lab procedures and safety (i.e. work study students and wage employees).
• Ability to work cooperatively with faculty members, staff and students.
• Ability to communicate with internal and external departments and businesses.
• Excellent oral and written communication skills.
• Knowledge of budget management and procurement practices.
• Ability to work with diverse groups.
• Ability to work without supervision.
• Experience in working in a chemical laboratory.
• Experience in the use and maintenance of chemical laboratory equipment.
• Experience in leadership and supervision.
• Experience with Microsoft applications and a student information system.
