Biotechnology Management and Entrepreneurship Adjunct Faculty

Position Responsibilities :

The faculty will revise the existing syllabus for currency, set up all pertinent areas of the Canvas classroom including discussion boards, syllabus, assignments, and weekly modules.

In-person, weekly meetings will include lecture, discussion, presentations, readings review, and guest speakers (if applicable).

The faculty member will grade all assignments in a timely manner (within 7 days of submission) and provide helpful feedback that students can use to improve on future assignments.

Biotechnology Management

Provides an overview of where value comes from and how it is lead and managed in Life Sciences (biotechnology, pharmaceutical and diagnostics) companies.

Topics include drug discovery and development, aspects of commercialization, health technology assessment and cost-effectiveness analysis;

personalized medicine, pharmacogenomics, and companion diagnostics; drug pricing and reimbursement; governmental and private payers.

Intellectual Property, Regulation and Compliance for Biotechnology

Introduces the legal system, including contract and intellectual property law; an understanding of the key regulatory agencies and areas of compliance impacting biotechnology activities;

and a strong foundation in the ethical issues concerning the development and commercialization of biotechnology products.

Topics include criminal and civil liability; laws that govern the use, testing, development, and licensing of biotechnology;

regulatory agencies; quality assurance; and ethics of research, among others.

Applications of Biotechnology

A thorough review on how novel scientific innovations apply biotechnology products to solve problems of unmet needs. We will consider the advantages and limitations of using bio-scientific tools in medicine, agriculture, industry, and the environment.

We will analyze possible consequences of translating science into products, considering the promises and controversies. Students will practice job related skills such as communication, teamwork, time management, problem solving and decision making.

Biostatistics and Informatics

Provides students with the fundamental principles of experimental design, statistical and exploratory data analysis and visualization, emphasizing research related to human health and clinical settings.

Statistical topics include descriptive statistics, hypothesis testing, analysis of variance, correlation, regression, chi-square test, and nonparametric methods.

Study design topics include population selection, inclusion / exclusion criteria, strengths and limitations of respective study designs, and interpretation of study results.

Pharmacology Product Development and Commercialization

This course provides students with a working knowledge of the drug discovery, development, and commercialization processes.

Topics will also cover assessment of commercialization potential and consideration for quality assessment and optimization strategies to match patients’ and healthcare system needs.

Finance for Startups and Entrepreneurial Ventures

This course will introduce students to the central concepts of modern finance : evaluating a

firm’s financial performance to include cash flow analysis and net present value; valuation of financial assets to include the time value of money as well as stock and bond characteristics and cost of capital analysis;

and capital budgeting techniques and working capital management. Additionally, the notion of risk and how risk is measured, the trade-off between risk and return in context of modern portfolio theory will be explored.

Students will be introduced to both theory and practice with a larger emphasis placed on application in real scenarios through case analysis.

Experience & Educational Background :

  • A minimum of a master’s degree in an appropriate field of study. A PhD or a Doctorate is preferred. Potential exceptions can be made for well-qualified candidates.
  • Extensive industry, research, or teaching experience.
  • Expertise in subject area(s) appropriate to the course(s)
  • Active engagement in relevant field or discipline
  • Demonstrated commitment to supporting colleagues and / or students
  • Excellent presentation, written, and verbal communication skills
