Company Description

UMMC Midtown Campus, one of two campuses of the University of Maryland Medical Center, is a community teaching hospital in Baltimore City. Located near Mount Vernon, it focuses on helping people manage chronic diseases and provides medical and surgical care in a 180-bed facility.

Job Description

Under limited supervision, the role plans, coordinates, leads, and monitors quality improvement initiatives within clinical service departments and across the UMMC Downtown campus. Communicates with organization leadership, clinical teams, and other departments to drive organizational change toward high reliability and Zero Harm. Ensures awareness of and implements the QAPI program and Annual Operating Plan goals. Provides leadership to multidisciplinary teams to accomplish quality improvement strategies, and is accountable for overall quality of care and compliance with CMS, Joint Commission, and disease-specific certifications. Collects and analyzes data, conducts presentations, provides consultation, staffs and leads committees, and promotes High Reliability Organization (HRO) principles and a Just Culture.

The position encompasses roles such as subject matter expert, coordinator, educator, project manager, data analyst, and facilitator. It requires effective interpersonal, management and leadership skills, working knowledge of clinical workflows, and credibility with colleagues. Duties include working with clinical service departments on quality improvement strategies to enhance patient outcomes, maximize financial reward within pay for performance programs, and optimize Vizient Q&A dashboard rankings. The role collaborates with leadership, staff, advanced practitioners, and physicians to implement an organization-wide, planned approach to quality improvement and Zero Harm. It develops and maintains relationships with key medical staff and serves as a quality improvement resource for teams and staff across both campuses.

Responsibilities

  • Assist in coordinating and implementing activities toward becoming a high reliability organization with a focus on Zero Harm

Collaborate with Quality leadership to direct and implement the bi-campus, integrated quality improvement program including :

  • Quality Program Management : oversee implementation of the quality improvement program and lead multidisciplinary teams
  • Develop and lead projects aligned with organizational priorities including QAPI, AOP goals, pay-for-performance programs, and Vizient Q&A
  • Collect, review, analyze, and monitor performance data; identify trends; prioritize opportunities for improvement
  • Lead special quality improvement projects with resource and timeline planning
  • Prioritize improvement efforts with leadership; sustain improvements with action plans handed off for ongoing monitoring
  • Participate in organizational quality improvement committees and teams across campuses
  • Leadership : establish quality improvement priorities, promote a culture of quality and Zero Harm, facilitate problem-solving using RCA, PDSA, Lean, and other methods
  • Engage with leadership to set department and organizational quality focus; review data for quality improvement meetings; address issues
  • Educate employees and medical staff on quality improvement methodologies; contribute to the Quality Matters Newsletter; provide just-in-time training
  • Keep quality teams on track with timelines and expected results
  • Data Management : support quality metrics within pay-for-performance programs and Vizient Q&A; monitor indicators and maintain dashboards; identify trends and opportunities
  • Provide consultation to clinical and ancillary departments to establish quality indicators and resolve issues
  • Regulatory & Compliance Leadership

  • Provide leadership on regulatory compliance related to Joint Commission PI Chapter and CMS Conditions of Participation
  • May participate in organizational visits from accrediting agencies and provide staff education on regulatory quality compliance
  • May oversee actions taken in response to regulatory recommendations
  • Qualifications

    Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in Nursing or related health science field; Master’s degree preferred
  • Current licensure in Nursing or related field
  • Three years of progressively responsible experience in quality improvement
  • Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Strong knowledge of quality improvement methodologies and leadership in quality initiatives
  • Proven leadership, problem-solving, analytical, and project management skills
  • Ability to facilitate quality improvement processes in clinical settings and coach staff
  • Excellent communication across all levels of personnel and leadership
  • Ability to work with limited supervision and to collaborate across disciplines
  • Knowledge of regulatory standards and practices for acute care hospitals; familiarity with DHMH and physician practice standards
  • Proficiency with data management and basic software / tools; strong presentation skills

    Compensation :

    Pay Range : $40.61- $60.96
