Brooklyn Laboratory Charter Schools (LAB) is a mission-driven public charter school network serving scholars in the heart of Brooklyn. We are seeking a Chief of Staff (CoS) who will serve as a trusted partner to the CEO and a key driver of organizational alignment, strategy, and operational excellence. This role is ideal for a leader who can build strong relationships, coordinate complex work, and help a fast-paced organization deliver on its mission.
POSITION DESCRIPTION
The Chief of Staff is a senior leader responsible for ensuring that LAB’s strategic priorities move forward, its operations remain coordinated, and the CEO’s vision is translated into effective action. As a central hub for communication, planning, and project management, the CoS supports high-level decision-making and strengthens shared accountability across the organization.
This role requires sound judgment, strong interpersonal skills, and the ability to execute in a dynamic environment. Candidates with leadership experience across nonprofit, government, education, philanthropic, corporate, or other mission-driven sectors are encouraged to apply.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Strategic Leadership & Alignment
Serve as a senior advisor and thought partner to the CEO.
Coordinate the development, implementation, and monitoring of LAB’s strategic plan.
Facilitate clear communication and alignment between the CEO, Senior Leadership Team, school leaders, Shared Services, and the Board of Directors.
Support the CEO in long-range planning, policy development, and organization-wide problem-solving.
Operational Coordination & Execution
Manage and track key initiatives, projects, and priorities coming from the CEO.
Coordinate academic and operational information flow between LAB schools, Shared Services, and the Board.
Prepare reports, strategic updates, and communications for internal and external audiences.
Ensure that cross-functional work is moving effectively and that leaders have the clarity and support needed to execute.
Leadership Team Engagement
Serve as a member of the Senior Leadership Team and help shape organization-wide priorities.
Meet regularly with senior leaders to monitor progress, identify issues, and promote collaboration.
Represent the CEO at meetings with staff, external partners, community stakeholders, and public agencies as needed.
Culture, Communication, & Collaboration
Build trusted relationships across teams and encourage a culture of transparency and high performance.
Support the design and implementation of effective team structures and operational processes.
Model LAB’s values and reinforce a culture of service, equity, and excellence.
Additional Responsibilities
Provide technical expertise, research, and analysis to support decision‑making.
Manage special projects and undertake additional duties assigned by the CEO.
QUALIFICATIONS
Required
At least 5 years of leadership or senior management experience in operations, strategy, project management, education, government, nonprofit, philanthropy, or related fields.
Demonstrated track record of driving execution, managing complex projects, and coordinating cross‑functional teams.
Strong strategic thinking, organizational skills, and attention to detail.
Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
Ability to build relationships, establish trust, and work collaboratively with diverse stakeholders.
High level of discretion, integrity, and sound judgment.
Commitment to LAB’s mission and belief that every scholar can thrive academically.
Preferred (Not Required)
Experience working with Boards of Directors or governance bodies.
Understanding of budgeting, financial planning, or nonprofit management.
Advanced degree in Public Administration, Education, Policy, Management, or related field.
MBA optional — candidates from all sectors with strong leadership experience are welcome.
COMPENSATION
Salary Range :
$150,000–$200,000, commensurate with experience.
This position is also eligible for additional financial incentives and stipends as organizational resources, grants, or special projects become available. Brooklyn LAB is committed to recognizing high performance, expanded responsibilities, and significant contributions with supplemental compensation when possible.
