POSITION DESCRIPTION

Michael Baker International is looking for a mid-level Landscape Architect that enjoys working on a wide range of projects from concept to construction to help us grow our Western North Carolina Civil and Environmental Engineering practice, based in beautiful Asheville North Carolina.

Our work includes urban design, streetscape design, roadway enhancement planting designs, parks and recreation projects, sustainable design, and flood mitigation projects.

Working directly with our Design Principals, the successful candidate will be responsible for managing all phases of our project work that includes design, documentation, staff scheduling, project budgeting, scopes of work, and client relationships.

The Successful candidate will work under direct supervision of a Landscape Architect, assisting Civil Engineers, Technical Managers and Project Managers with data analysis, computations, design and plan production on civil engineering and landscape architecture projects, typically as a part of a multi-disciplinary team.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

The position requires demonstrated strong proficiency in Autodesk Civil 3D to generate detailed design of multi-use trails, roadway interfaces, stormwater design, site design, and grading to produce high quality design documents.

Candidates must possess excellent creative thinking and design ability, with demonstrated experience in the development and coordination of construction drawings.

Candidates must also have effective communication and interpersonal skills along with enthusiasm, creativity, and a commitment to produce high quality work products.

The applicant must have the aptitude to manage tasks with regards to project schedules, team coordination, client engagement, public meetings, and assignments independently under limited supervision.

  • Engages in and directs activities associated with planning, design, and construction documents including code analysis documents, studies, reports, sketches, schematic drawings, renderings, specifications, final contract documents, and as-built drawings.
  • Along with the project manager and other design professional, communicates with clients to establish project scope of work, building program needs, design fees, project schedule and budgets.
  • Performs site design of projects from conceptual stage to construction documentation.
  • Applies industry knowledge of architectural customs, building codes, practices and procedures to solve design challenges.
  • Assists clients with predesign activities and programming.
  • Develops conceptual design including presentation materials in short timeframe to assist contractor with pricing procurement during proposal stages.
  • Leads coordination efforts of all engaged engineering disciplines.
  • Utilizes integrated approach to site design with focus on sustainable solutions.
  • Manages production team to develop scale drawings, specifications and other contract documents for building construction.
  • Administers construction contracts and conducts periodic on-site observation of work during construction to monitor compliance with issued for construction documents.
  • Prepares project designs and plans using computer assisted design software and equipment.
  • Performs Quality Control Reviews.
  • Working knowledge of current industry software including Autodesk Civil 3D, Revit and BIM.
  • Assists with preparing and updating calculations to be used in design reports and final design.
  • Prepares reports detailing conceptual designs or analysis performed, along with results.
  • Demonstrates skills using various Microsoft Office programs to produce high quality exhibits, computations and reports.
  • Possesses firm understanding and utilization of native plant palettes.
  • Reviews shop drawings for conformance with contract plans.
  • Assists with quantities and project cost estimates.
  • Communicates with Manager, Engineers, and / or Project Managers regarding project issues.
  • Assists with document preparation for regulatory agencies to obtain required permits.
  • Provide basic guidance and informal training to less experienced personnel.
  • Assists in the technical design of projects that includes layout, grading, drainage from schematic design through construction document phase.
  • Familiarity with MicroStation, and GIS proficiency desired, but not required.
  • Additional skillsets desired, but not required include 3D Modeling (Rhino, SketchUp, Lumion and Enscape), SketchUp, Vectorworks Landmark, Adobe Photoshop, InDesign, Illustrator, Land FX, 3D Graphics and hand drawings.
  • Other duties as assigned.

PROFESSIONAL REQUIREMENTS

4-7 years related experience

BS / BLA in Landscape Architecture from a university accredited by the Landscape Architecture Accreditation Board (US) or the Landscape Architecture Accreditation Council (Canada).

  • or-BS in Civil Engineering from an accredited university.
  • Professional Landscape Architect) or . (Professional Engineer).Licensed applicant willing to obtain reciprocity in states needed for project work.

If not currently obtained, applicant will be willing to pursue professional licensure.

Work Environment

Office Location in North Carolina is preferred. Other locations are possible but dependent on education, level of experience, and abilities.

COMPENSATION The approximate compensation range for this position is 74 -95K. This compensation range is a good faith estimate for the position at the time of posting.

Actual compensation is dependent upon factors such as education, qualifications, experience, skillset, and physical work location.
