About CapRadio
CapRadio is a mission-driven public media organization that exists to create more informed, involved and educated communities. It is the only nonprofit broadcaster in the region that operates a 20-person local newsroom and develops locally-produced news, classical music and jazz shows. CapRadio is recognized for its fact-based, nonpartisan news coverage, state politics and government accountability reporting that is aired daily by NPR stations throughout California, hyperlocal community-engaged journalism and locally-hosted classical music and jazz programs. Each week, nearly 500,000 people in the greater Sacramento region choose CapRadio as a valued source of news, storytelling, music and events. It is an auxiliary organization of Sacramento State University.
The Position
CapRadio is hiring a dynamic producer to join its daily talk show, Insight with Vicki Gonzalez. Insight airs live Monday through Thursday from 12 to 1 p.m. As CapRadio’s flagship news show, Insight is dedicated to in-depth interviews with elected officials, community leaders, advocates, experts, artists and more to provide background and understanding on breaking news, big events, politics and culture in the Sacramento region and beyond.
A producer for Insight comes with a wide range of news judgment and must be able to adapt to different assignments and thrive in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment. They are expected to contribute to each show. Responsibilities include pitching segment ideas, developing sources, researching and writing segments from pitch to broadcast, booking guests, as well as assisting in studio during the live show. Experience with audio editing is a must. Digital and social media experience is a plus. Experience with directing a live show is a plus. Producing in-the-field will be required on an as-needed basis. Must be willing to be in the newsroom on show days, Monday through Thursday.
An Insight Producer ensures high-quality, timely reporting that meets the editorial standards of the newsroom. Although their primary responsibility is to support Insight and its daily production of in-depth, context driven journalism, this position is also responsible for producing across multiple platforms. This position contributes content to broadcast programming – such as local newscasts for Morning Edition and All Things Considered - in the form of spots, wraps, voicers, readers, cut-and-copies and 2-way interviews. They also collaborate with the digital team and write compelling content for the CapRadio website, SacramenKnow and other newsletters, as well as social media accounts.
An Insight Producer works collaboratively in a team format and must have excellent communication skills, in addition to proficiency in breaking news coverage, daily news coverage and interviews in the aforementioned forms. Journalists in this role work collaboratively across newsroom roles, engaging with colleagues of varying experience levels. They contribute to daily news planning, staying informed on local and national developments through multiple sources. Experience in broadcast reporting — whether audio or video — is essential. In addition to the capital city, Insight’s coverage spans more than a dozen counties - including the North State, Lake Tahoe, Sierra Foothills and the Central Valley. Knowledge of the surrounding region is a plus.

You must be able to commute to our Sacramento, CA office on a regular basis.
The annual salary for this role ranges from $66,650 to $73,000.
