The Print and Graphic Design Manager is responsible for developing and managing the creative and graphic design process for the California Science Center to effectively promote the museum across a wide variety of media. This includes, but is not limited to, the conception, design and branding of all California Science Center print and digital publications, promotional signage, advertisements, website graphics and e-newsletters. The position works closely with all departments to design and provide art direction to ensure the Science Center brand stays consistent.
QUALIFICATIONS
- B.F.A. in Graphic Design strongly preferred
- At least 5 years of experience in graphic design, publication management and maintaining brand consistency throughout designs
- Experience working for a museum, science center, informal education institution, or nonprofit organization is highly desirable
- Fluency and hands-on experience with industry standard software (Adobe Creative Cloud applications), file-management services (Dropbox, SharePoint), and digital asset management systems (cloud-based DAM)
- Working knowledge of modern web design techniques, including XHTML and CSS
- Knowledge of PHP Hypertext Preprocessor Language and Content Management Systems; Drupal CMS a plus
- Strong working knowledge of Mac platforms and troubleshooting skills
- Demonstrated record of creativity; conceptually talented and innovative in developing effective creative concepts and seeing them through from design to execution
- Strong familiarity with offset and digital printing processes including, but not limited to, prepress, concrete file preparation and paper stock selection
- Ability to maintain good working relationships with print and signage vendors; must know how to articulate print specifications to print vendors
- Excellent proofreading skills
- Excellent interpersonal communication, collaboration and solution-building skills
- Strong organizational skills with keen attention to detail
- Ability to work in a deadline-driven environment and create designs on tight deadlines
- Adherence to current expectation to work a minimum of four days in the office per week, with flexibility to work additional days on-site as needed to advance projects and priorities
- Ability to work a 40-hour week required; willingness to work a flexible schedule that may include early mornings on occasion
MAJOR JOB RESPONSIBILITIES
Produce marketing publications and digital graphics that effectively promote the California Science Centers exhibitions, IMAX Theater, educational programs, expansion projects, fundraising programs and overall missionCollaborate with various departments within the organization to plan, design and produce ongoing print and digital publications as neededDevelop and manage the creative and graphic design process, as well as print and digital production from concept development to completion for the Marketing Department and various departments within the institutionFacilitate the approval process of new and ongoing publications from start to finishDesign advertisements and promotional materials for exhibitions and movies; this may include, but is not limited to, pole banners, billboards, print and web advertisements, rack cards, brochures, direct mail, couponsProduce brand guidelines and logo treatments for educational programs, Science Center events, and other programs as neededServe as the Administrator for ResourceSpace (cloud-based DAM) and train other staff in its useDesign on-site marketing signage such as large-format banners, building wraps, decals, and window clings and oversee vendor installation (occasional early morning work required for installation)Help develop and manage content for the website and e-newslettersCollect bids from print and signage vendors, and attend off-site press checksWork with the Director of Marketing to ensure brand consistency across all publicationsMaintain publication archives and print samplesSchedule e-blast deployments and troubleshoot email marketing platform (WordFly)Perform other duties as requiredMANAGEMENT RESPONSIBILITIES
