Position Summary
A Network Cable Technician, also known as a Cable Installer or Networking Cable Installer, is a professional who builds, repairs, and coordinates with outside vendors to establish and maintain the infrastructure of all state telecom networks, such as Local Area Networks (LANs), Wide Area Networks (WANs), and Wireless Point to Point (P2P) technologies.
Position Responsibilities
Choose and verify cable pathways, conduct site surveys for clients, assist in designing, creating and implementing standards and specifications, oversee the progress of cabling projects outsourced to third-party contractors, maintain all documents related to cabling infrastructure, carry out installation of cable supports and pulling network cable pathways, testing and troubleshooting copper installations, troubleshoot cabling issues, install IP devices, terminate phone jacks and distribution frame, establish and troubleshoot video, audio, and IP networks, and provide to the organization’s sales team material and labor estimates.
Utilize an understanding of the different types of cables and how they work together to create a successful network.
Knowledge of LAN / WAN systems to help in the design of internal and external networks, and to test and assess network systems to eliminate problems and make improvements.
They undertake racking and stocking of network devices as required in network closets. They provide support to network infrastructure service group with all moves for issues that may occur and require physical access such as running a new patch and replacing a patch.
They ensure that materials needed to perform daily duties are properly organized and cables are partly stocked.
Their role also entails improving upon existing installation and troubleshooting procedures, as well as monitoring and troubleshooting networks and server infrastructure, installing network cabling, hardware, and software, and handling backup and restoring processes for critical systems.
They are responsible for communicating status and alerts to all relevant departments and escalating issues to on call personnel.
The work description of network cabling technicians entails providing test equipment required for testing all new and suspected faulty cable connections and cable infrastructure;
testing and measuring fibers and replacing identified faulty fiber cables.
To perform this job successfully, you must enjoy solving complex problems and using computers and tools.
He / she must have strong aptitude for learning, as well as strong math skills and ability to work alone and in a team.
Physical Demands and Work Environment
Physical demands include the ability to bend, crouch, stoop, sit and / or lift objects weighing 50 pounds or more daily. The position uses manual equipment, including dollies and carts.
They should have strong analytical and problem-solving skills and be able to work with a team or independently. They must be willing to work overtime and be ready to travel as the need arises.
Education and Experience
Requirements include two years of experience involving the installation, operation, repair or maintenance of a voice or data network;
completion of a technical school or vendor training in the area of Computer Operations / Networking Technology; or professional certification such as CCNA, JNCIA and CompTIA Network+.
Knowledge / Skills / Abilities
Basic knowledge of networking principles, cabling, wireless principles, power and uninterruptable power supply, and connectivity troubleshooting
Knowledge of national electric code (NEC), BICSI methodology of cabling installation, point to point wireless circuits, and voiceover internet protocol and firewall rules
Ability to adapt to rapidly changing demands
Ability to work under pressure
Strong analytical and problem-solving skills and be able to work with a team or independently
Skills in customer service, and verbal and written communication
Level II
This is the career level where employees are assigned responsibilities at the full performance level for performing technical duties involving the installation and configuration of networking equipment, performing network analysis, troubleshooting, upgrading, and patching network equipment, screening help desk requests for appropriate routing, updating billing, and providing mentorship to lower-level staff.
Education and Experience
Requirements include those identified in Level I, plus one additional year of qualifying experience.
Knowledge / Skills / Abilities
Those identified in Level I, plus :
Working knowledge of wireless technology, upgrading and patching network equipment, enterprise network monitoring, firewall analysis and configuration
Intermediate knowledge of networking principles, including routing, switching and networking protocols
Knowledge of networking diagraming software
Intermediate knowledge of networking troubleshooting and analysis
Troubleshooting connectivity issues and updating technical documentation
Critical thinking and organization skills
Ability to install and configure networking equipment, perform network analysis and troubleshoot, screen help desk requests for appropriate routing, and update billing
Valued Skills and Experience
Prior experience with Juniper switches, routing, and firewalls
