The safety manager should have a passion for health and safety and know how to teach others to be concerned about workplace safety. Under the direction of the Director of Human Resources, the safety manager shall administer and oversee all safety and environmental programs related to employee safety and environmental compliance and security related to operations. This will include safety evaluations, environmental agency paperwork and communication, accident report writing, accident investigations, plant inspections, employee training, tailgate safety meetings, plant safety meetings and directing monthly Safety Management meetings. In addition, the safety manager will establish and maintain communication with department Supervisors, Plant Managers, and Operations Manager to monitor employee safety, identify employee hazards and take proactive steps toward accident prevention as well as ensure the company's good standing with local agencies involving wastewater, air-resources, hazardous materials updates, CUPA and other related functions.
- Ability to manage multiple projects and priorities at the same time while meeting set deadlines.
- Assemble an employee safety committee at each plant.
- Create and distribute a safety training schedule for each plant.
- Lead the safety incentive program.
- Conduct safety walkthroughs and inspections to identify safety risks and provide recommendations for improving safety in the workplace with the employee safety committee. Conduct safety meetings on a regular basis.
- Educate employees, supervisors, and plant managers on safety standards and expectations.
- Investigate and oversee documentation of all employee injuries / accidents to prevent re-occurrences and to see that all reporting and safety program requirements are complied with. This is a shared duty with the Human Resources Office who will take the lead in accident investigation and document compilation and reporting.
- Maintain documentation of the company's safety procedures, employee training, and accidents.
- Maintain Association's Illness and Injury Prevention Program (IIPP)
- Update the SDS binders regularly.
- Update the CERS / Hazardous Materials online interface.
- Oversee and escort local agency officers or representatives during walk-through inspections.
- Maintain current list of hazardous materials and update all materials related to CUPA, CERS, fire department, and environmental health requirements.
- Update and inform management in a timely manner regarding conditions that need to be addressed related to compliance with local, state, and federal agencies.
- Assist in budget / cost analysis related to safety or environmental projects when necessary.
- Must maintain good attendance and punctuality.
- Must maintain a good and open dialogue with the Directors of Human Resources, Operations, and other members of management.
- Should be able to work a flexible schedule.
Bachelor's degree preferred or the Completion of OSHA Safety Certificate Program along with 3-5 years' experience working in health and safety in an industrial environment.
