Job description

As a Registered Nurse in our Intensive Care Unit (ICU), you will play a crucial role in delivering exceptional healthcare to critically ill patients. You will work closely with a multidisciplinary team of healthcare professionals to provide comprehensive and specialized care. This is a Level 2 Trauma ICU with 42 beds, caring for critically ill patients with cardiac, respiratory, post-surgical, and trauma-related conditions.

Key Responsibilities :

  • Patient Assessment : Perform thorough and ongoing assessments of patients' conditions, including monitoring vital signs, administering medications, and assessing the need for interventions. Typical nurse-patient ratios are 1 : 1 or 1 : 2; 1 : 3 if patients have no vents or drips.
  • Critical Care : Provide specialized care to critically ill patients, including those with complex medical conditions, post-surgical recovery, and trauma-related injuries. Patients may include post-tPA, TPE, open-heart surgery, and small head bleed cases.
  • Ventilator Management : Monitor and manage patients on mechanical ventilation, ensuring proper settings and patient comfort. RT support available 24 / 7; RN assists with bedside trachs.
  • Medication Administration : Administer medications, fluids, and blood products as prescribed, and monitor patient responses while maintaining accurate records. RNs must titrate critical care drips including vasopressors, inotropes, antiarrhythmics, anti-hypertensives, sedatives, paralytics, analgesics, anticoagulants, and insulin.
  • Collaborative Care : Collaborate closely with physicians, respiratory therapists, and other healthcare professionals to develop and implement individualized care plans. Intensivist coverage is 24 / 7; nurse works with RTs, MDs, and NPs.
  • Emergency Response : Be prepared to respond to medical emergencies, including code blue situations, and provide immediate life-saving interventions.
  • Patient and Family Education : Educate patients and their families about their conditions, treatment options, and post-discharge care.
  • Equipment Operation : Competently operate and troubleshoot complex medical equipment used in the ICU. Familiarity with EPIC EMR required.
  • Infection Control : Strictly adhere to infection control protocols to maintain a safe and sterile environment.
  • Documentation : Maintain accurate and comprehensive patient records, including assessments, interventions, and progress notes.
  • Compliance : Ensure compliance with all hospital policies, procedures, and regulatory requirements.

Qualifications :

  • Current licensure as a Registered Nurse in state of practice.
  • Required certifications : BLS, ACLS, NIHSS.
  • 2+ years of ICU experience preferred; Level I / II trauma experience preferred.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to remain calm and make critical decisions in high-pressure situations.
