Job description

This Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) position is located at the Grand Island VA Medical Center in Grand Island, Nebraska. This LPN works under the direction of an RN as a member of a Primary Care team, providing basic and specialized nursing care for adult and geriatric patients with a variety of physical, mental, behavioral, or psychological needs.

The selectee will be working directly with veterans in a face-to-face, video or telephone setting. The duties of this position include, but are not limited to :

  • Serves as an LPN on a Patient Aligned Care Team (PACT) in Primary Care.
  • Assists with intake of Veterans in preparation for provider visits and maintains clinic flow.
  • Completes pertinent clinical reminders and preventative health screenings.
  • Documents all data collected and nursing care provided in the Veterans electronic medical record. Reports all relevant patient information to Clinic RN or provider.
  • Assists providers with exams / procedures as needed.
  • Performs treatments and procedures such as electrocardiograms, vital signs, weights, blood glucose readings, basic foot care, bladder scans, ear flushes, etc.
  • Tracks and administers required immunizations.
  • Administers ordered medications in accordance with Medical Center and Nursing Service policy and monitors for any side effects.
  • Participates in the management and follow up of patient care needs and requests.
  • Initiates procedure preparations, adapting them to patients physical and emotional needs before, during and after procedures, observing and managing therapeutic or possible complications resulting from the procedure.
  • Initiates and performs nursing measures to prevent complications by recognizing deviations and / or changes in patient's conditions.
  • Recognizes and responds / initiates emergency measures. Responds promptly to emergency situations in the clinic including but not limited to administering CPR.
  • Performs venipuncture and specimen collection and preparing specimens for storage and / or transport.
  • Participates in PACT team huddles and meetings as needed.

Physical requirements : This position requires some degree of fitness, strength, and agility. Duties require extensive periods of standing and walking. Working with patients requires regular and recurring bending, lifting, stooping, stretching, pushing, pulling, lifting arm overhead, and similar activities. You will be asked to participate in a pre-employment examination or evaluation as part of the pre-employment process for this position. Questions about physical demands or environmental factors may be addressed at the time of evaluation or examination.

Work Schedule : Monday - Friday, 8 a.m. - 4 : 30 p.m.

Pay : Competitive salary and regular salary increases. When setting pay, a higher step rate of the appropriate grade may be determined after consideration of higher or unique qualifications or special needs of the VA (Above Minimum Rate of the Grade).

Paid Time Off : 37-50 days of annual paid time offer per year (13-26 days of annual leave, 13 days of sick leave, 11 paid Federal holidays per year). Selected applicants may qualify for credit toward annual leave accrual, based on prior [work experience] or military service experience.

Parental Leave : After 12 months of employment, up to 12 weeks of paid parental leave in connection with the birth, adoption, or foster care placement of a child.

Child Care Subsidy : After 60 days of employment, full time employees with a total family income below $144,000 may be eligible for a childcare subsidy up to 25% of total eligible childcare costs for eligible children up to the monthly maximum of $416.66.

Retirement : Traditional federal pension (5 years vesting) and federal 401K with up to 5% in contributions by VA

Insurance : Federal health / vision / dental / term life / long-term care (many federal insurance programs can be carried into retirement)

Permanent Change of Station (PCS) : Not authorized

Student Loan Repayment Program (SLRP) : This occupational series is eligible for the Student Loan Repayment Program (SLRP). Participants must sign a service agreement and maintain an acceptable level of performance to remain eligible for this program. Funding is limited; therefore, applications will be approved on a first-come basis.
