Summary : This position requires the individual to perform patient care and transportation duties up to the level authorized by the EMT-P certification in the State of North Carolina. In concert with state certification and local medical control, the incumbent will contribute to a busy metropolitan "advanced life support" ambulance service providing emergency, non-emergency, convalescent, and long-distance service. The individual is required to obtain and accurately record all available billing information, including signatures, and to thoroughly and accurately document physical findings and treatment rendered on a patient care record. Work load for the position is considered demanding and the service sets specific performance requirements which must be met. The position may work under the supervision of a Shift Supervisor and a training officer. Will perform rescue duties with an assigned crew or individually as needed.
Major Job Functions

- Demonstrates the critical behaviors and meets the performance expectations (criteria) established in the CFVHS Core Competencies for All Employees (published separately)
- Inspect, thoroughly clean, inventory, and restock the ambulance assigned to him / her and report any deficiencies in any equipment observed to supervisor and / or make repairs, if possible
- Inspect and clean areas assigned, including the bays, bathrooms, kitchens, locker rooms, bedrooms, etc. and assist in maintaining the building and grounds in a neat and clean, and orderly manner
- Respond to calls from and change locations when requested by the supervisor or dispatcher, handles both routine transfers and emergency calls
- Receive and answer calls following the medical protocols and standard operating procedures set out by the department and the medical director
- When encountering patients, this position requires the rendering of medical care, including, but not limited to, psychological support, airway and bleeding control, splinting, bandaging and the performance of ALS skills and procedures appropriate to the individual's level of certification
- Drive an ambulance in a safe and smooth manner consistent with good driving practices
- Maintain a NC driver's license with an appropriate driving record
- Attend continuing education classes and trains on a regular basis to the satisfaction of the training officer and Medical Director
- Other duties as assigned
Minimum Qualifications
Education and Formal Training :
High school graduate or equivalent requiredCurrent certification by the State of North Carolina as a ParamedicCurrent certification in Basic Life Support (BLS) as sponsored by American Heart AssociationCertification in "Advance Cardiac Life Support" (ACLS) onceCertification in "Pediatric Advanced Life Support" (PALS) onceCompletion of NIMS 100, 200, & 700All certifications must be maintained continuously while employedMust possess and maintain a current driver's license and acceptable driving recordWork Experience :
Experience with an advanced life support service is preferredAt least one year of field EMS / Rescue or related work experience is preferredKnowledge, Skills, and Abilities Required :
Thorough working knowledge of emergency medical procedures, rescue techniques, hazardous material incidents, equipment and supplies employed in pre-hospital care, and of communications equipment usedThorough working knowledge of locations in Cumberland County and the cities and locations contained therein, especially major streets and landmarks, and of rest homes, convalescence care centers, and nursing homesAbility to work calmly under extremely stressful conditions and follow established rules, procedures, and protocolsAbility to deal with patients, their families and others in a courteous, compassionate, professional manner under the most adverse circumstances, and an ability to maintain an effective working relationship with co-workers and other emergency and health care personnelAbility to drive all types of ambulance vehicles and a thorough knowledge of safe driving procedures used in the response of emergency vehiclesAbility to lift and move a minimum of one hundred pounds (100 lbs.) on a regular basis with the added strength to lift upwards of 150 lbs. when the situation requires, includes moving a patient from a bed to the floor, chair to the floor, or from a stretcher to a bedHas knowledge of the age specific physiological, psychosocial, developmental, and spiritual needs of the patients typically servedPhysical Requirements :
