The salary range for this position is $183,100-$258,700. "Off-scale salaries" and other components of pay (i.e., a salary that is higher than the published system-wide salary at the designated rank and step) are offered when necessary to meet competitive conditions, qualifications, and experience.

Position description

The Department of Surgical and Radiological Sciences at the UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine is expanding its surgical services and seeks a veterinarian with advanced training in small animal soft tissue surgery to join the existing small animal surgical team .

Areas of expertise or interest that would fit well with our case load and expansion trajectory include minimally invasive surgery, oncology, and urgent / critical specialty referrals; however, all areas of expertise and interest are welcomed.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Clinical : The position includes a 50% clinical effort to the Small Animal Soft Tissue Surgery Service of the Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital (VMTH). Estimated annual clinical effort assignments are 20 weeks (typically M-Th or Tu-F) and up to 10 weeks / year on call, with on call weeks currently served concurrently with clinic weeks. On call time could be increased and daytime duty adjusted accordingly based on the interests of the candidate. Individual will be responsible for directing, instructing and supervising veterinary students and residents; providing health care and service to in-house and referral patients; and advising and consulting with referring veterinarians and clients.

Research and Creative Work : Faculty are expected to advance the discipline through creation and dissemination of new knowledge with documentation in peer-reviewed publications. The development of a creative, focused, and productive basic and / or clinically-oriented research program is a fundamental and indispensable requirement of the position. Individual will provide leadership in directing research projects of veterinary students, residents, and / or graduate students.

Teaching : Responsibilities include : 1) participation in lectures and laboratories in the DVM professional curriculum; 2) clinical teaching in the Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital (VMTH); 3) participation in the graduate clinical (resident) training program of the VMTH; and 4) participation in the graduate academic programs (MS and PhD) of the campus if applicable.

Professional Competence : Advance the discipline within the VMTH, as well as locally and nationally, through participation and leadership in providing high quality patient care in the hospital environment. Expected to establish reputation for clinical excellence locally, regionally, and nationally, depending upon level of appointment. Must demonstrate clinical competence and over a career become recognized for achievement in a focused area of clinical practice.

Service : University and public service through committee work, participation in professional organizations, continuing education, and other appropriate means is required.

Must be eligible for veterinary medical licensing in the State of California (California Business and Professions Code Section 4846-4857). Individuals must obtain a full CA license CA Business and Professions Code Section 4846 or a University license CA Business and Professions Code Section 4848.1 prior to beginning clinical duties.

Qualifications

Basic qualifications

(required at time of application)

Board certification in the American College of Veterinary Surgeons (ACVS) or European College of Veterinary Surgeons (ECVS), or completion of an approved residency of the ACVS or ECVS by November 1, 2025.

Documented clinical experience and competence in small animal soft tissue surgery.

Demonstrated experience or interest in teaching, particularly clinical instruction.

Documented record of creative scholarship or potential to develop a clinical research program in small animal soft tissue surgery.
