ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCE SPECIALIST 2-3
Job Summary :
The Environmental Scientist will function as a Data Manager for the Solid Waste Unit. The Solid Waste Unit oversees regulation (permitting, inspections, and compliance) of landfills, waste tires, special waste, used oil and batteries, septage haulers, and biohazardous waste, as well as investigation and enforcement of environmental complaints related to solid waste.
The Solid Waste Unit has also been tasked with completing several rule creation projects over the next couple of years. In addition, there have been some transitions in data management spurred by the move to primarily remote work over the past few years.
The individual selected for this role will primarily focus on consolidating, streamlining, and updating our unit data management, including creating and tracking unit metrics to identify trends and pinch points in performance data.
This position is available for remote work on a full-time basis within Arizona (including virtual office arrangements)

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities (KSAs) :
Working knowledge of theoretical and practical aspects of project management
Proficiency with Project Management body of knowledge
Strong customer services skills, excellent interpersonal, written and oral communication skills
Ability to prioritize and organize multiple tasks, lead and work collaboratively in teams to complete assignments; synthesize feedback and adjust plans accordingly;
build strong relationships inside and outside of the agency; and develop and write technical documentation
Knowledge of State and Federal environmental regulations pertaining to hazardous waste, environmental sciences and research, AZ sources of pollution, best practices for preventing the release of pollutants, investigation techniques and statistical analysis, Agency policies and processes
Selective Preference(s) :
Bachelor’s degree in environmental / chemical engineering, hydrology, hydrogeology, geology or environmental science
Level 2 : 2-5 years’ relevant experience
Level 3 : Requires 5 years’ relevant experience (Master’s degree may substitute for 2 years of experience, Doctorate may substitute for 4 years of experience) For Project Managers : 3-5 years should be project management experience.
Certified Associate in Project Management (CAPM) through the Project Management Institute (PMI)
Driver's license - Possession of and ability to retain a current, valid state-issued driver's license is required
