Shift : Monday - Friday, 6 : 00 AM - 2 : 45 PM or 2 : 30 PM - 10 : 00 PM

Security Clearance : No Clearance Required

Hutco Branch : Portsmouth

Rate of Pay : $26 per hour

Position Overview

Hutco, Inc. is seeking skilled Sheet Metal Mechanics J4 to join our Sheet Metal Department in Norfolk, Virginia. This role involves advanced-level sheet metal fabrication, installation, and repair for shipboard HVAC and habitability systems. Ideal candidates will have significant experience in reading and interpreting mechanical drawings, operating fabrication equipment, and performing quality assurance with minimal supervision.

Job Responsibilities

Journeyperson 4 (J4) - Sheet Metal Mechanic

  • Fulfill all Journeyperson 3 requirements.
  • Read and interpret mechanical drawings for layout, fabrication, installation, and repair of shipboard HVAC and habitability systems.
  • Fabricate and install metal joiner (MJ) bulkheads, MJ doors, berths, galleys, and office outfitting with expert knowledge.
  • Operate advanced fabrication equipment such as press brakes, hand brakes, power rollers, hand rollers, and general sheet metal machinery.
  • Write Work Authorization Forms (WAFs) and hot work tickets and perform trade quality assurance tasks independently.

Qualifications

  • Technical Knowledge :

    • Expertise in sheet metal fabrication, including HVAC and habitability systems for shipboard construction.

  • Ability to operate manual and powered equipment such as press brakes, hand brakes, and rollers.
  • Proficiency in reading mechanical drawings, blueprints, and specifications.
  • Experience :

    • J4 : Significant expertise in advanced sheet metal fabrication and installation with little to no supervision.

  • J3-J1 : Progressive experience in assembling and installing ventilation systems and habitability components.
  • Skills :

    • Strong organizational and prioritization skills.

  • Understanding of various types of metals and fabrication techniques.
  • Basic math skills for measurements and layout.
  • Safety : Thorough knowledge of personal protective equipment (PPE) and safety protocols in industrial and shipyard environments.

    • Physical Requirements

  • Perform tasks such as lifting, climbing, and crouching.
  • Work in confined spaces, tanks, and on elevated platforms.
  • Navigate ships and understand compartment designations.
  • Ability to operate in shipyard environments, which may include exposure to varying temperatures, noise, and dust.
