Emergency Communications Center Supervisor
The New York City Housing Authority (NYCHA) is the largest public housing authority in North America. NYCHA is home to approximately 3.9% of New York City's population : it provides housing for more than 339,900 low-income New Yorkers through its public housing and Section 8 leased housing programs. NYCHA is comprised of 277 developments across the five boroughs of NYC, consisting of approximately 160,000 apartments in 2,106 buildings. NYCHA's Emergency Management and Services Department (EMSD) is charged with responding to all emergencies and hazards impacting essential services and day-to-day operations, to include large-scaled disasters. EMSD accomplishes this responsibility with a strategic network of public and private partners to ensure the protection of NYCHA's infrastructure and the preparedness of its stakeholders, both internal and external. EMSD was formed in April of 2022 with the merging of NYCHA's Office of Emergency Management and Emergency Services Department. As an Emergency Communications Center Supervisor, you will be responsible for overseeing the day-to-day operations of the Emergency Communications Center. You will supervise a team of dispatchers, ensure the efficient handling of emergency calls, monitoring and coordinating emergency response activities, responding to emergency situations, and maintaining communication with stakeholders for NYCHA. Key Responsibilities : - Emergency Call Handling : Supervise dispatchers in handling emergency calls, ensuring timely and accurate responses. - Dispatch Coordination : Coordinate the dispatch of emergency responders, including police, fire, and medical personnel, in response to emergency calls. - Communication Systems Management : Monitor and maintain communication systems, including radio and telephone systems, to ensure continuous operation. - Quality Assurance : Conduct quality assurance checks on dispatch calls to ensure adherence to protocols and procedures. - Training and Development : Provide training and guidance to dispatchers to ensure they are proficient in handling emergency calls and using communication systems. - Incident Reporting : Prepare incident reports and maintain records of emergency calls and dispatch activities. - Collaboration : Collaborate with other emergency services agencies and departments to coordinate responses to emergencies. - Staff Supervision : Supervise and evaluate the performance of dispatchers, providing feedback and guidance as needed. - Resource Management : Manage resources, including personnel and equipment, to ensure effective emergency response. - Emergency Response Coordination : Coordinate with emergency response agencies to ensure a coordinated and effective response to emergencies. Note : This position requires working a flexible schedule, including evenings, nights, and weekends.
Minimum Qualifications :
1. A four year high school diploma or its educational equivalent, plus five years of supervisory experience in the operation, repair and maintenance of large tenanted buildings, three years of which must have been in responsible charge of properties having not less than seven maintenance and operations employees. Higher education may be substituted for up to two years of this experience on the basis of 30 semester credits from an accredited college for each year of experience. However, all candidates must have at least three years of experience in responsible charge of properties having not less than seven maintenance and operations employees.
Preferred Skills :
Preferred Qualifications / Skills - Bachelor's degree in emergency management, Public Administration, or a related field preferred. High school diploma or equivalent considered with relevant experience. - Proven experience in emergency management or a related field, with some years of supervisory experience preferred. Previous experience in emergency services, healthcare, or a related field is preferred. - Strong communication and interpersonal skills, both verbal and written. - Proficiency in the use of emergency communication systems. - Knowledge of emergency response protocols and procedures. - Ability to work in a fast-paced, high-stress environment and remain calm and composed in emergency situations. - Ability to lift and carry heavy equipment and supplies. - Ability to work flexible hours, including nights, weekends, and holidays. - Ability to work independently and as part of a team. - Excellent problem-solving and troubleshooting skills. - Knowledge of building maintenance operations. - Knowledge of safety protocols for using tools and equipment. - Proficiency with MS Office 365. - Ability to work under pressure and meet tight deadlines.
