Child Abuse Pediatrician - Full Time - Hartford, CT

SUMMARY

The Child Abuse Pediatrician is accountable for delivering comprehensive quality patient care, including diagnostic and therapeutic interventions according to standards of practice to children from birth through adolescence. The practice context is a specialized, multi-disciplinary suspected child abuse evaluation team. Primary site of clinical practice is at CT Children's Medical Center as part of the SCAN (suspected child abuse and neglect) team.

Responsibilities

ROLE RESPONSIBILITIES

Clinical responsibilities:

• Performs medical evaluations and recommends management on children and adolescents who are affected by suspected child abuse or neglect. This may include suspected physical abuse, emotional abuse, medical child abuse, sexual abuse, and/or neglect.
• Provides outpatient consultation for patients at CT Children's Medical Center and Satellite locations with suspected abuse or neglect.
• Perform comprehensive anogenital evaluations with photo documentation and testing and treatment of sexually transmitted infections.
• Answers and returns telephone calls to patient families, physicians, and other providers or agencies. May provide phone guidance on management and triage of patients with suspected maltreatment.
• Performs case reviews/record reviews on cases referred to the SCAN Program.
• Provides testimony regarding child abuse cases as requested by courts and other official entities.
• Participates in on-call coverage

Teaching, Community Resource Development and Collaboration:

• Participates in training and education of students, residents, and other health care providers involved in evaluating children and adolescents affected by suspected child abuse.
• Participates in multidisciplinary evaluations, management and team discussions of child abuse cases.
• Incorporates preventive health care through patient and family education and child health advocacy.
• Provides professional support to regional health care providers who are involved with the evaluation and
• treatment of child abuse and neglect cases.
• Provides clinical training about child abuse and neglect both at Connecticut Children's and within the community.
• Works to establish best practices regarding child abuse medical evaluations and treatment in the region.

Program Development:

• Participates in special programs and services as assigned.
• Participates in research activities.
• Participates in regular case review and quality improvement activities regarding medical evaluations in the program.
• Participates in peer review.
• Works on compliance of parent organizations regarding child abuse standards and regulations.

Demonstrates knowledge of the population-specific differences and needs of patients in appropriate, specific populations from neonate through adolescence and applies them to practice. Demonstrates cultural sensitivity in all interactions with patients/families and co-workers.

Demonstrates support for the mission, values and goals of the organization through behaviors that are consistent with the CT Children's STANDARDS.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

Supervises APRNs in the program as well as medical trainees at various levels (Fellow, resident, medical student) who are rotating with the SCAN team.

Qualifications

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE REQUIRED

Board certification or eligible for board certification in Child Abuse Pediatrics

LICENSE and/or CERTIFICATION REQUIRED

Current State of Connecticut MD licensure required and maintained thereafter.

Current Basic Life Support (BLS) (AHA accredited) required upon hire and maintained thereafter.
