The Foundation for the National Institutes of Health (FNIH), based in North Bethesda, Maryland, is seeking a dynamic, strategic, and mission-driven executive to serve as its next Chief Financial Officer (CFO). With a strong partnership orientation and an enterprise-wide perspective, the CFO will help build organizational capacity, optimize financial operations, and support the Foundation’s continued growth and impact.

Established by Congress in 1990 to support the mission of the NIH, the FNIH is a not-for-profit 501 (c)(3) charitable organization. The FNIH brings together leading scientists to navigate and solve complex human health problems and advance development of new therapies, diagnostics, and potential cures; advance global health and equity in care; and celebrate and train the next generation of scientists. The FNIH raises private funds from individuals, corporations, foundations and philanthropic organizations.

Reporting to the Chief Executive Officer (CEO), the CFO is a key member of the Executive Leadership team and will collaborate with the CEO, Chief of Staff, and fellow CXOs to shape enterprise strategy, align resources to organizational priorities, drive cross-functional alignment, and lead with a shared responsibility for mission delivery, talent, culture, and long-term sustainability. A core part of the CFO’s mission will be helping staff at all levels become better stewards of financial resources, including cost management, and better partners in aligning those resources with the FNIH mission.

The CFO collaborates with the Finance and Audit Committee and Investment Committee to support the Board in fulfilling its oversight responsibilities concerning FNIH’s financial reporting, planning, operating needs, and objectives. The ideal candidate combines strong technical expertise with an ability to think strategically on FNIH program and funding priorities as well as foster trust, promote transparency, and support mission-driven decision-making. This role follows the FNIH hybrid work model, which currently requires DC-DMV based employees to be on-site in North Bethesda for a minimum of six days per month. Employees who live outside the DC-DMV area are currently required to commute to FNIH’s offices a minimum of once per quarter. Candidates should expect periodic in-office presence as an essential part of the position.
