Position Details

BASIC FUNCTION

Performs basic nursing tasks providing quality care to the children and assists them in the activities of daily living. Acts as a role model and takes on additional responsibilities. Performs all duties in a manner which promotes team concept.

REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES

The classification specification does not describe all duties performed by all incumbents within the class. This summary provides examples of typical tasks performed in this classification.

Works closely with the RN and takes direction as determined appropriate by the RN.

Assumes nurse delegated activities, i.e., trach suctioning, CIC.

Understands the purpose of the child’s care plan and carries out the plan according to the procedures taught by the RN.

Monitors child’s status throughout school day. Reports observations of status to the RN and documents data in charts and files.

Reviews patient file on an ongoing basis for changes in plan of care. Follows any new program or precaution noted in care plan.

Organizes and prioritizes work appropriately, completing assignment in a timely manner, is flexible and able to adapt to changes in assignment, works as a team member, offering and seeking assistance as needed.

Assists in keeping classroom neat and clean by cleaning nursing equipment and keeping service area clean and in order. Ensures equipment and supplies are labeled and inventoried.

Consistently follows the schedule for each child which includes utilizing appropriate positioning, equipment, adaptive devices, restraints, communication techniques and activities. Utilizes good body mechanics.

Attends nursing inservices and meetings, participates in fire drills. Attends minimum number of inservices to maintain CNA certification. Attends unit and other staff meetings.

May be assigned specific tasks after demonstrating competency in the performance of the specific task.

Communicates in conflict or stressful situations in a manner that facilitates constructive problem resolution.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

Education: Must have taken, or take within two months of hire, a course on blood pathogens.

Experience: At least one year experience as a CNA

Any other combination of education and experience that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities may be considered.

KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES

Must have a working knowledge of routine nursing equipment, mechanical lifts, transportation and positioning equipment.

Special Requirements:

Current CPR certification.

Registered as a CNA in good standing with the Oregon State Board of Nursing.

Some positions in this classification may require the use of a personal automobile and possession of a valid Class C Oregon driver’s license.

WORKING CONDITIONS

Work Environment: Work is performed primarily in a standard office environment with extensive student, parent and public contact and frequent interruptions.

Hazards: Potential conflict situations.

Physical Demands: Primary functions require sufficient physical ability and mobility to work in an office setting; dexterity of hands and fingers to operate a computer keyboard and other office equipment; sitting or standing for extended periods of time; kneeling, bending at the waist, reaching overhead, above the shoulders and horizontally to retrieve and store files and supplies; lifting, pushing, pulling and carrying office equipment, supplies and materials weighing up to 25 pounds; repetitive hand movement and fine coordination to use a computer keyboard; hearing and speaking to exchange information in person or on the telephone; seeing to read, prepare and assure the accuracy of documents.

Portland Public Schools is a public employer and participates in the Public Employees Retirement System (PERS/OPSRP). Eligible employees are required by statute to contribute 6% of salary on a pre-tax basis to OPSRP/IAP, after serving six months under a PERS employer.
