Departmental Overview

The Master of Computational Social Science (MaCSS) is a new one-year professional master's program that will provide students with practical skills for analyzing, interpreting, and visualizing social data.

Social data are data about people, groups, organizations, and their interactions from surveys and censuses, company websites, store loyalty cards, cell-phone records, social media posts, internet searches, etc.

MaCSS graduates will be able to work as analysts and data specialists in business, non-profit, and government settings. The MaCSS program is housed in the Interdisciplinary Social Science Programs in the College of Letters and Science, and will welcome its first cohort of approximately 25 students in summer 2024.

Position Summary

The Assistant Director of Career Services and Employer Relations is a new role and a key aspect of the program's success.

Career development, placement, and outcomes for MaCSS graduates are critical to the program's reputation; these outcomes directly affect our ability to attract competitive and diverse students.

The Assistant Director should be innovative and someone who will thrive in a "start-up" type environment. This individual will develop and execute a scalable strategy for career services and employer relations for the MaCSS program.

Manages career programming and utilizes their proven experience developing and implementing strategies to generate employment opportunities for MaCSS students.

Responsibilities

Career-Development Program Design, Implementation, and Management

  • Collaborate with the Executive Director, Faculty Director, Faculty Graduate Group, Graduate Student Affairs Officer, Social Science Division senior staff, and external parties to identify opportunities for students and prepare students for their job search.
  • Curate career-development resources for students, including videos, self-study exercises, and self- assessment tools.
  • Coordinate workshops and panels that would be of interest to different groups (e.g. women, members of underrepresented groups, first generation, etc.).
  • Understand student needs that affect their capacity to to pursue their career goals, such as resiliency and imposter syndrome.
  • Research economic and employment trends to provide context for marketing decisions and support outreach efforts.
  • Regularly compile data on student and employer use of advising and marketing services, conduct needs assessments. and evaluate career-services effectiveness.
  • Publish student stories or career outcomes, on the program website and social media platforms that highlight the opportunities a MaCSS degree provides.

Employer Relations

Research organizations that might hire MaCSS students and alumni in industry, government, and nonprofits : determine their needs and interviewing / hiring processes;

Prioritize which organizations to approach. Propose action plans to MaCSS leadership.

  • Establish relationships with external partners who could hire MaCSS students and alumni. Maintain those relationships to understand their changing needs.
  • Develop both short- and long-term strategies for identifying jobs that would be of interest to MaCSS students.
  • Arrange informational sessions, campus visits, and off-campus visits for students to meet potential employers.
  • Manage referrals to potential employers from MaCSS leadership, the Social-Science Dean's office, and program faculty to develop new or stronger relationships with the MaCSS program.
  • Promote networking, and professional opportunities to students.
  • Deliver career-focused events that incorporate the needs of external partners.

Career Advising

  • Advise students in one-on-one and small-group sessions to support their career goals, including their job-search efforts.
  • Provide career advising for a wide range of students from early to mid-career with different academic backgrounds, and those who are switching functions and / or industries.
  • Work with students to ensure their career goals align with the needs of potential employers and provide recruiter feedback on students' knowledge, skills, and abilities.
  • Use standard quantitative and qualitative tools to help students assess their career goals. Guide students by providing decision making and goal-setting tools to help them identify their interests, values, and skills, as well as obstacles to obtaining their goals.

Identify personal crisis situations and refer students to the appropriate resources on campus for help.

Communicate up-to-date job-market information and recruiter perceptions to students.

Alumni Network

Build long term-relationships with students and alumni. Facilitate networking opportunities between current students and alumni.

Required Qualifications

  • Three to five years of relevant work experience in career-development programs and industry recruiting.
  • Proven ability to work successfully with people from diverse cultures.
  • Advanced knowledge of career-development theories, counseling processes, career-coaching techniques, career decision making, learning styles, and job-search techniques.
  • Advanced knowledge of needs-assessment theory, processes, and practice, as well as workshop and program design.
  • Advanced knowledge of career services; recruiting and staffing methods; and employment trends.
  • Strong analytical, problem identification, and organization skills.
  • Experience coaching and advising entry-level and / or mid-level career professionals from diverse industries, cultures, and backgrounds.
  • Highly effective interpersonal, presentation, and oral and written communication skills.
  • Experience collaborating with recruiters, hiring managers, and senior management from industry, nonprofits, and government.
  • Ability to effectively and persuasively represent the MaCSS program.
  • Ability to excel in a fast-paced customer service-oriented environment.
  • Able to work occasional evening and weekend hours.
  • Advanced degree in a related area and / or equivalent experience or training.

Salary & Benefits

This is a 100% full-time (40 hrs a week) exempt career position, which is paid monthly and eligible for UC Benefits.

This range takes into account the wide range of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions including but not limited to experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, analysis of internal equity, and other business and organizational needs.

It is not typical for an individual to be offered a salary at or near the top of the range for a position. Salary offers are determined based on final candidate qualifications and experience.

The budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position is $85,000.00 - $95,000.00.
