Job description

The University of Southern California (USC), founded in 0, is the largest private employer in the City of Los Angeles. As an employee of USC, you will be a part of a world-class research university and a member of the "Trojan Family," which is comprised of the faculty, students and staff that make the university what it is.

Keck Medicine of USC is seeking a collaborative and visionary physician leader to serve as its Associate Chief Medical Informatics Officer (ACMIO). This role offers a unique opportunity to help drive innovation at the intersection of clinical care and health information technology across a leading academic health system.

The ACMIO will report directly to the Chief Medical Informatics Officer (CMIO) and hold a dotted line to a clinical chair within the Keck School of Medicine. In this hybrid position, the ACMIO will dedicate at least four days ( hours) per week to informatics-related responsibilities, with the remaining day (8 hours) available for clinical duties or other Keck School of Medicine activities, as coordinated with leadership.

Education, Qualifications and Accountabilities:

Candidates must hold an MD or DO degree and be licensed (or eligible for licensure within days) to practice medicine in California. Board certification in an ACGME-recognized specialty is required, while board certification in Clinical Informatics or an advanced degree—such as an MBA, MPH, MHA, or MMM—is preferred.

As a trusted partner across clinical and technical domains, the ACMIO will provide informatics leadership and guidance across Keck Medicine of USC facilities. The role is instrumental in supporting digital transformation efforts—leveraging clinical expertise to shape the design, implementation, and optimization of health IT systems, while ensuring alignment with organizational goals and frontline care delivery.

This leader will foster strong relationships across departments, promoting provider engagement and advancing the use of clinical decision support tools, data analytics, and IT solutions that drive high-quality, reliable, and patient-centered care. The ACMIO will represent clinical priorities in strategic discussions, facilitate cross-disciplinary collaboration, and serve as a vital conduit between physicians, administrators, IT professionals, and vendors.

The ideal candidate will bring at least four years of progressive leadership experience as a physician leader. Recent or current clinical practice (within the last months) is preferred. Candidates should possess a deep understanding of medical informatics, clinical systems implementation, and the cultural shifts required to introduce new technologies into clinical workflows. Familiarity with current health IT trends, tools, and best practices is essential, as is hands-on experience with system design, optimization, and change management—particularly in the context of electronic medical record systems across multi-facility organizations.

Experience in quality improvement, outcomes management, and organizational change is critical. Strong interpersonal and communication skills are a must, with an ability to effectively engage and influence a wide range of stakeholders including physicians, nurses, pharmacists, IT staff, and administrative leaders. The ACMIO should be able to listen actively, promote informed decision-making, and articulate the value of technical solutions in both clinical and non-clinical settings. Cerner/Oracle Health experience is preferred.

In addition to supporting informatics strategy, the ACMIO will participate in advisory and work groups, helping to build consensus and trust among providers, clinical teams, and business leaders. This role is key in enabling education and training efforts, supporting peer learning, and championing the meaningful use of clinical systems. The ACMIO will also help foster cross-departmental collaboration and provide support to IS leaders in engaging with hospital, school, and community practice leadership.

Above all, this role calls for a mission-driven leader who upholds high ethical standards, values teamwork, and is energized by the opportunity to help shape the future of care delivery at Keck Medicine of USC.

The annual base salary range for this position is $,. When extending an offer of employment, the University of Southern California considers factors such as (but not limited to) the scope and responsibilities of the position, the candidate’s work experience, education/training, key skills, internal peer equity, federal, state, and local laws, contractual stipulations, grant funding, as well as external market and organizational considerations.
