The Global Health Advocacy Incubator (GHAI) supports civil society organizations advocating for public health policies that reduce death and disease. We bring a proven advocacy approach and a global network of local partners, built on a 25-year track record of success across multiple issues in more than 60 countries. GHAI is an initiative of the Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids.The Global Health Advocacy Incubator (GHAI), a program of the Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids (CTFK), support policy change campaigns around the globe to improve public health. To date, that work includes tobacco control policies, food and nutrition policies, cardiovascular health, road safety, drowning prevention, prevent epidemics, and vital statistics among others, and the organization has supported advocacy campaigns in more than 80 countries across the globe.CTFK/GHAI provides funding to civil society organizations (CSO) from low- and middle-income countries around the globe, through grants agreements that the organizations can receive through a competitive application process. CSOs that receive financial grant support also receive technical assistance from CTFK/GHAI to advance their advocacy campaigns. With support from CTFK/GHAI CSOs are able to eventually enact and implement laws that save lives (, through policies including tobacco control, nutrition, road safety).
Program description The Cardiovascular Health Program (CVH), GHAI supports civil society organizations with adopting key policies aimed at reducing the extensive death and disease burden from cardiovascular disease worldwide. We focus on national and regional policies that are attributable to the three main causes of cardiovascular disease and death: 1) eliminate industrially produced trans-fatty acids (iTFA) from the food supply; 2) reduce sodium consumption through policies mandating front of package labelling and salt targets; and 3) provide resources to improve access to hypertension treatment, and medications. GHAI is one of many partners of the Resolve to Save Lives (RTSL) CVH initiative.
Position Overview To successfully work on cardiovascular health issues, the Associate Director should have a strong familiarity with non-communicable diseases (NCDs). The Cardiovascular Health effort focuses on policy and regulatory change in key areas including eliminating artificial trans-fats, reducing sodium intake, and improving hypertension treatment in low and middle-income countries.The AD will work closely with the CVH Director and GHAI team to provide advocacy support by: mapping the political landscape; identifying allies, champions, and adversaries; identifying and working with in-country coordinators and local partners advance relevant policy campaigns. This support may include policy/advocacy training, media campaigns, journalism training, and related efforts.
WHAT YOU'LL ACCOMPLISH:
- Develop standardized procedures to compile and analyze secondary research and to develop primary policy-oriented research (train the trainers approach).
- Conduct secondary research and develop in-depth knowledge and expertise on key policy issues to support the advocacy efforts of the CVH program and partners.
- Provide policy analysis to support the CVH team.
- Work with GHAI staff, along with global and local partners, to prepare relevant briefing papers, fact sheets, reports, presentations, written testimony, media materials etc. These efforts could focus on the extent of the problem, causes of the problem, evidence supporting policy solutions, opposition tactics, etc.
- Serve as a resource for information and analysis to GHAI staff and local partners.
- Provide strategic guidance to the CVH team for resources and material development, including databases/repositories.
- Lead the metrics development to measure our impact and for donors’ reports.
- Collaborate in the development of training curriculum on research for advocacy for different audiences.
- Coordinate the development of scientific publications to position GHAI as a thoughtful global leader in CVH and the Food and Nutrition team.
- Assist GHAI legal/industry/communication team analyzing proposed legislation and messages on key policy issues.
- Perform other duties as directed by the CVH Director, GHAI.
SKILLS YOU'LL BRING TO THE ROLE:
- Bachelor’s degree in relevant field required, advanced degree preferred.
- Five-seven years of demonstrated experience in working on policy issues in global health, preferably in non-communicable diseases;
- Proven track record of coordinating multi-faceted and complex projects related to policy change in global health, including ability to anticipate issues, develop pro-active solutions, and follow-up and meet deadlines and deliverables;
- Understanding of the tools and practices needed to influence public health policy in middle- and low-income countries, and experience working with in-country organizations to use these tools in effective policy change campaigns;
- Proven ability to coordinate across multiple stakeholders with sensitivity to the political and policy dynamics, and familiarity with multilateral and bilateral partners in global health;
- Experience working at the international level and in cross-cultural settings, and the ability to travel internationally;
- Supervisory experience of teams located remotely is an asset;
- Strong written and oral communications skills, including the ability to write donor reports;
- Fluency or working knowledge of a language other than English is preferred;
- Consultative and collaborative approach; comfort working across a large and complex international NGO on complex policy issues; and
- Bachelor’s degree in public policy, communications, public health or other relevant field. Advanced degree preferred.
