Director, Philanthropic Giving - SF / Silicon Valley

The United States Olympic & Paralympic Committee (USOPC) is a nonprofit organization and is one of the few National Olympic & Paralympic Committees that does not receive government funding for its Olympic & Paralympic programs. It relies on the generosity of donors and sponsors. The USOPC established the U.S. Olympic and Paralympic Foundation (USOPF) as the fundraising organization for the USOPC and invests significant resources in its Development division.

Overview

The Director, Philanthropic Giving is responsible for generating significant support for Team USA by leading the major gift program in Northern California, with emphasis on the San Francisco and Silicon Valley regions. The role focuses on identifying, cultivating, and soliciting major gift prospects (individuals) and participating in donor stewardship activities throughout California. The Director will manage a portfolio of approximately 100 prospects capable of giving $500,000+ and will report to the Regional Director, Philanthropic Giving - West.

Responsibilities

Establish an annual operating plan for the assigned region in consultation with the Regional Director, Philanthropic Giving - West, with measurable performance objectives aligned to fundraising goals. Field progress toward region objectives and adjust plans as needed. Fundraising goals start at $2M annually with expected expedited growth.

Manage a major gift portfolio of ~100 prospects to meet regional philanthropic goals. Focus on donor-centered philanthropy and ensure all activities are logged in the fundraising database for accurate donor records.

Identify major and principal gift prospects with the Strategic Advancement team. Cultivate prospects through in-person visits (min. 120 annually), phone, email, and engagement opportunities such as events.

Solicit significant charitable gifts to support the vision and mission of the USOPC and USOPF.

Engage in donor stewardship and communications, including collaboration with stewardship and engagement teams and participation in events such as the Games.

Coordinate with USOPF Board Members and trustees to identify, cultivate, and solicit major and principal gift prospects.

Leverage the USOPF’s technology resources to identify, cultivate, and solicit qualified prospects; serve as a technology champion within the region.

Serve as a key fundraising contact for the region and perform other duties as assigned by the Regional Director.

Demonstrate accountability and transparency in line with USOPC expectations as a steward of the Olympic and Paralympic Movements.

Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree or equivalent work experience; advanced degree preferred

10+ years of successful fundraising experience in a non-profit environment

Proven ability to cultivate, solicit, and close $250,000+ gifts and achieve significant revenue goals; ability to earn the confidence of diverse internal and external stakeholders

Strong preference for experience in a California development role with knowledge of San Francisco and Silicon Valley philanthropic cultures

Experience in a sophisticated development organization; athletic environment experience a plus

Excellent written and verbal communication; ability to articulate the organization’s vision to donors, volunteers, and staff

Professional, detail-oriented, and capable of working independently as well as in a team

Strong interpersonal skills and ability to collaborate with senior leaders and community members

Discretion and confidentiality regarding donor information

Ability to work effectively in a remote working environment

Creative, flexible, and proactive with a can-do attitude

Ability to leverage existing contacts to build a new portfolio of prospects

Appreciation for the Olympic & Paralympic Movements and the power of sport

Tools, Equipment, & Conditions

Some travel (minimum quarterly); some domestic and international travel

Standard office equipment; remote work flexibility

Regular attendance at work as an essential job function

Work Location

Remote – San Francisco or Silicon Valley areas

Compensation & Benefits

Hiring pay range : $135,000 – $170,000 per year

Full-time, exempt position; expected to work 40 hours per week

Bonus : Eligible for Annual Incentive Award Program with a 20% target (program subject to change or elimination by USOPC at any time)
