The role you'll contribute :

The registered nurse utilizes principles of the nursing process to provide for the continuity of nursing care administered to a specific group of patients consistent with the philosophy, goals, policies, and procedures of the Emergency Room and hospital administration.

\n \n\n \n

Provides for delivery of patient care through assessment with identification and prioritization of presenting problems or needs, to facilitate optimum patient care.

\n \n\n \n

Evaluates patients presented to the Emergency Room upon their arrival.

\n \n\n \n

Assesses the patient's status on admission by performing a pertinent physical assessment and obtaining a nursing history as documented in the E.R. record and in accordance with Standards of Care.

\n \n\n \n

Performs continuing assessment of patient's condition throughout the time in Emergency Room until discharge or admission as documented in E.R. record.

\n \n\n \n

Recognizes potential emergency / life threatening situations and implements preventive measures.

\n \n\n \n

Cardiac - Accurate assessment of cardiac patients and interpretation of EKG monitor.

\n \n\n \n

Abdomen - Demonstrates competence in assessment of abdomen complaints including auscultation of bowel sounds.

\n \n\n \n

Respiratory - Recognizes urgent / emergent complaints and initiates prompt interventions.

\n \n\n \n

OB / GYN - Demonstrates appropriate assessment of OB / GYN patients including FHT's, LMP and recognizes urgent situations.

\n \n\n \n

EENT - Demonstrates competence in accurate history taking and rapid intervention of patients and EENT complaints.

\n \n\n \n

Dermatological complaints - Displays accurate assessment of patients presenting a rash or animal, human, snake or insect bites / stings and initiates appropriate and prompt treatment.

\n \n\n \n

Renal / Urinary - Initiates appropriate actions on patients presenting with UTI's, kidney stones, etc.

\n \n\n \n

Psychiatric Conditions - Demonstrates appropriate assessment and intervention of acute and chronic psychiatric patients, implementing safety precautions as needed.

\n \n\n \n

Infectious Diseases - Recognizes infectious diseases and initiates appropriate isolation precautions.

\n \n\n \n

Drug-Related Complaints - Recognizes and performs pertinent assessment and intervention anaphylaxis / allergic reactions and overdose patients.

\n \n\n \n

Trauma - Demonstrates appropriate assessment of lacerations, orthopedic injuries, neurological injuries, multisystem injuries, simple and complex injuries and their implications.

\n \n\n \n

Homicide / Suicide - Demonstrates appropriate assessment of mechanism of injury and of homicide / suicide patients and notifies pertinent agencies and preserves evidence correctly.

\n \n\n \n

Pediatric - Recognizes urgent / emergent problems associated with the pediatric patient.

\n \n\n \n

Diagnostic Testing - Recognizes lab, x-ray, and ABG abnormalities.

\n \n\n \n

When applicable, follows hospital protocol and physician orders regarding use of restraints.

\n \n\n \n

Responsible for accurate, descriptive documentation pertinent to each patient, to maintain and facilitate quality patient care.

\n \n\n \n

Demonstrates skill and judgement necessary to implement physicians orders, standing orders, procedures and protocols of care, to provide quality patient care.

\n \n\n \n

Maintains and demonstrates knowledge of therapeutic / side effects, interactions and skill in administration of medication.

\n \n\n \n

Accurately administers and initiates intravenous therapy including blood, blood products, cardiac drips, etc.

\n \n\n \n

Recognizes need for referrals and initiates intervention when appropriate.

\n \n\n \n

Maintains control of narcotics by proper utilization of Pyxis inventory.

\n \n\n \n

Provides a timely concise and pertinent oral report to oncoming shift.

\n \n\n \n

Provides health care information to patient, family and significant others, in a manner understandable to them, to facilitate and improve quality patient care.

\n \n\n \n

Facilitates discharge of patient from the Emergency Room to their home when applicable after giving care instructions both verbal and written to patient, family and significant others with appropriate follow up care with a physician.

\n \n\n \n

Teaches patient and / or family and requests return demonstration if applicable (i.e., rib belts, crutch walking, ace bandage wrap, etc.).

\n \n\n \n

Provides personalized care by talking with and listening to patients and families while they are in the department.

\n \n\n \n

Facilitates admission and / or transfer of patients from the ER to appropriate room or other health care facility correctly.

\n \n\n \n

Keeps family informed about patient's treatment and progress.

\n \n\n \n

Informs patients / families of pertinent hospital / department policies when the need arises.

\n \n\n \n

Associate remains flexible to changing systems, is expected to demonstrated quality and effectiveness in work habits and treat staff, physicians, patients and families with consideration and respect.

\n \n\n \n

Understands the Computerized Physician Order entry process and proficiently uses the electronic medical record for retrieval of patient information.

\n \n\n \n

Understands computer downtime procedures.

\n \n\n \n

Monitors Electronic Medical Record for new physician orders and diagnostic results.

\n \n\n \n

Performs all other duties as assigned.

\n \n\n \n

Qualifications

\n \n

The expertise and experiences you'll need to succeed :

\n \n\n \n

A graduate of an accredited school of nursing or degree program.

\n \n\n \n

BSN Preferred, will consider ADN enrolled in BSN program

\n \n\n \n2 - 3 years of experience in ED, trauma or urgent care nursing required.\n \n\n \n

Current license or permit issued by the state of Texas to practice as a registered nurse or in a qualifying compact State.

\n \n\n \n

Achieves and maintains ACLS, BLS, PALS and TNCC or ENCP

\n \n\n \n
