Carlow University is seeking a skilled and dependable
Maintenance Mechanic II to join our Facilities team on a full-time basis. In this journey-level, multi-trade position, you will play a critical role in keeping our Pittsburgh campus safe, functional, and welcoming for students, faculty, and staff.
This is a hands-on opportunity for an experienced trades professional who takes pride in quality workmanship across carpentry, plumbing, electrical, welding, painting, masonry, and mechanical systems. You will exercise technical independence, lead helpers on assigned tasks, and work directly within the policies, procedures, and mission of Carlow University and the Sisters of Mercy.
Job Duties: - Repairs doors, door frames, and furniture; fabricates and installs temporary partitions; builds forms; and operates and maintains wood lathe, sanders, jointer, power saw, planer, and related power and hand tools to perform assigned carpentry duties.
- Paints and decorates interiors of buildings; and performs masonry work in connection with buildings, foundations, walks, and walls.
- Installs and maintains plumbing fixtures; maintains steam lines, steam heating, and cooking equipment; and measures, cuts, threads and installs pipe for steam and water lines.
- Installs electric circuits, wall plugs, and lighting fixtures; and repairs and reconditions fans.
- Makes repairs and adjustments to laundry washing, drying and pressing machinery, and schedules oiling and greasing of equipment.
- Performs lead work over helpers performing basic assignments. Makes repairs to roofs and installs flashing and spouts.
- Welds and brazes metals by use of arc and acetylene welders; and erects steel for construction.
- Performs repair on structures, such as building forms, finishing concrete, welding steel components, and operating construction equipment when required.
- Removes snow from sidewalks and entryways using basic snow removal equipment. Performs related work as required.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: - Knowledge of the methods, materials, tools, and practices used in at least two of the building, electrical, or mechanical trades.
- Knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions of the trades involved. Ability to care for and use the tools and equipment utilized in the trades involved.
- Ability to detect defects in equipment and to make proper repairs or adjustments. Ability to lead a small group of semi-skilled workers.
- Ability to interpret and work from pencil sketches and diagrams. Ability to follow oral and written instructions.
- Ability to operate and/or utilize basic lawn care and snow removal equipment. Ability to lift and move heavy objects and to work under adverse weather conditions. Must be able to walk or stand 95% of the time.
- Must have valid PA driver’s license.
Minimum Experience & Training: - Four years of experience in building and plant maintenance work, which has involved at least two of the building, electrical, or mechanical trades or any equivalent combination of experience and training that affords the applicant with the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
